
Vipers Erase Early Four Run Deficit

Rallying from an early hole the Calgary Vipers (17-13) defeated the Strong Warriors of Maui (11-14) 8-5 at Foothills Stadium in Calgary, Alberta. Giving up four runs in the second inning Calgary rallied scoring in four straight innings to take the lead including two runs in the fourth and three in the fifth. Garret Holleran (2-3) got the start and after giving up the four runs pitched great in lasting seven innings while giving up four runs for the victory. Claudio Galva (10) meanwhile recorded another perfect save including two strikeouts.
At the plate Jonny Kaplan led the way with four hits while Louie Templeton chipped in with three including two runs scored. Matthew Jay Broughton (0-2) took the loss in giving up four earned runs in four and a third innings.
Maui took a 4-0 lead in the top of the second inning when Mitch Einertson doubled, Matt Kavanaugh walked, Stephan Pearson singled in a run, Steven Garcia collected a sacrifice fly, and Patrick Rose hit a two run shot.
Calgary scratched across a run in the third frame as Garret Holleran walked, Jonny Kaplan singled, Wilver Perez was hit by a pitch to load the bases, and Drew Miller drove in a run with a fielder's choice for a 4-1 score.
The Vipers got closer in the fourth when Louie Templeton singled, Jimmy Rohan walked, a passed ball advanced both runners, Holleran collected a run batted in with a ground out, and with two outs Kaplan singled in a run for a 4-3 game.
Calgary took the lead in the fifth inning as Drew Miller was hit by a pitch, Justin Tellam singled, Miller scored on a wild pitch, Templeton singled, Rohan doubled in a run, and Jeff Giacomini collected a RBI base hit for a 6-4 advantage.
A run was added to the lead in the sixth when Kaplan singled, Bryan Burke laid down a sacrifice bunt, and Wilver Perez drove in a run with a triple for a 7-4 score.
Maui got back into the scoring in the eighth frame as Pearson singled, advanced to second base on a passed ball, and scored on a Steve Boggs RBI single for a 7-5 game.
The Snakes got that run back in the bottom of the inning when Burke walked, stole second base, advanced to third on a throwing error, and scored on a Miller sacrifice fly for a 8-5 lead.
Calgary continues this four game series against the Strong Warriors of Maui on Saturday June 25th at 5:05 with before the game a Zumba Guinness World Record will be attempted along with the Inflatamaniacs performing and on Sunday June 26th at 1:35 it will be Kids Day with the Inflatamaniacs back for a second day and a Family Pack for $60.00.
On Toonie Tuesday June 28th at 6:30 the Vipers will host Jose Canseco and the Yuma Scorpions for 80s Night. Canseco will be available to the media before the game at 4:00. The two teams will also play on Weiner Wednesday June 29th at 6:30 for $5.00 Student Night, on Thursday June 30th at 7:30 for FIREWORKS, on Canada Day Friday July 1st at 1:05 for Baseball Bonanza, and on Saturday July 2nd at 5:05.
The Calgary Vipers will be hosting three Women's Pro Fastpitch games between the USAA Pride and the Tennessee Diamonds August 2nd, 3rd and 4th at 6:30 at Foothills Stadium. Tickets are $16 for the Lower Bowl and $12 for the Upper Bowl. Three game packages are also available for $45 and $33. In addition there will be two skill clinics August 2nd and 4th from 10am - 12pm. Cost is $99 for a Clinic and Lunch or $120 for the Clinic, Lunch and two Lower Bowl tickets. There will also be a Lunch Banquet August 3rd including an autograph session with both teams and a lower bowl ticket to the August 3rd game for $49.95 with keynote speaker Cheri Kempf, the Commissioner of the NPF and an ESPN analyst.
