Edmonton Capitals News Release

Edmonton, AB - The Edmonton Capitals gave Jose Canseco and the Yuma Scorpions a rough welcome to TELUS Field on Thursday, beating the former MLB superstar and Scorpions player-manager 5-1 in the opening showdown of a four-game series.

Canseco, a two-time World Series champion and former American League MVP, suited up in left field for the Scorpions on Thursday and went 0-for-4 at the plate with a pair of strikeouts. Caps starting pitcher Lou Pote struck out the 46-year-old both times and added five other K's to lead the home team to victory.

Pote improved to 3-1 on the North American League season by holding Canseco and the Scorpions to just one unearned run on three hits through six innings. The Caps also got a sold inning of relief pitching each from Jorge Vasquez, David Davidson and Chad Blackwell, who combined to strike out five Scorpions and gave up just two hits.

Pote didn't just succeed with his arm on Thursday, as he also drove in one of the Caps' five runs, while catcher Lou Santangelo went 3-for-3 in the game with one run scored and one RBI. Second baseman Matt Rogelstad hit the only home run of the game, a monstrous solo shot over the right field wall during Edmonton's three-run seventh. First baseman Brent Metheny also made an impact with an RBI double, a run scored and three walks.
