Vipers Dominated by Antoine Walker and Stampede

HIDALGO, TEXAS - Antoine Walker scored a game-high 26 points with 11 rebounds to lead the Idaho Stampede past the defending NBA Development League champion Rio Grande Valley Vipers 116-94 on Monday at State Farm Arena in front of a crowd of 3,761.

Walker hit 9-of-17 shots, including 5-of-10 from behind the arc. Portland Trail Blazers-assignee Luke Babbitt scored 24 points, Tony Bobbitt scored 22 points and Cedric Jackson had 10 points with 12 assists.

The Stampede (20-25) opened the game on a 13-5 run over the opening 4:39 thanks in-part to five points by Walker and four from Babbitt, who scored 14 points in the first quarter. The Vipers (30-15) trailed 33-15 at the end of the quarter after committing 13 turnovers which led to 17 points for the Stampede.

Willie Jenkins scored five points as the Stampede opened the second quarter on a 13-4 run to take a 46-19 lead, their largest of the half, at the 8:17 mark. The Vipers pulled within 64-42 at halftime when Patrick Sullivan hit a lay-up at the buzzer.

The Vipers committed 17 of their 22 turnovers in the first half, which led to 21 first half points and 25 overall for the Stampede.

After the Vipers outscored the Stampede 29-25 to pull within 89-71 at the end of the third quarter, the Stampede opened the fourth quarter on an 11-2 run to take a 100-73 lead and put the game out of reach.

The Vipers were led in scoring by Jon Scheyer, who scored 21 points while tying his career-high with five three-pointers made. Jerel McNeal scored 19 points while Houston Rockets-assignee Hasheem Thabeet scored 11 points on 5-of-5 shooting with six rebounds and four blocked shots.

The Vipers and Stampede complete the season series on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. at State Farm Arena. It's Go Green Night. The first 1,000 fans in attendance will receive green tote bags, courtesy of McAllen Public Works. Fans can bring their old phone books to the arena to be recycled. Fans can purchase hot dogs, popcorn and soda for $1.00 each as well as beer for $1.50 each. Doors open at 6:00.
