Roanoke Valley Vipers News Release
ROANOKE, VA - The Roanoke Valley Vipers, member of the United Hockey League (UHL), jumped ahead to a 2-0 lead at the Roanoke Civic Center on Sunday night, looking to avenge their loss on Saturday to their rival RiverDogs. The Vipers relinquished their lead, however, allowing two third-period goals, and then lost in a short, five-round shootout as Richmond walked away with their second straight shootout win over the Vipers.
Mike Krelove got the Vipers on the board first at the 15:21 mark of the second period, scoring his first goal of the season, and the first professional goal of his career. Fellow-rookies Matt Miller and Dave Shillington got the assists on Krelove's goal. Miller scored next three minutes and 22 seconds into the third period off passes from Alex Jerofejevs and Shillington. The Vipers couldn't hang onto the lead, though, as the RiverDogs scored two unanswered goals at the 9:58 and 11:17 marks of the period, forcing a shootout for the second night in a row.
L.P. Martin scored as the Vipers first shooter, but David Brosseau and J.J. Wrobel scored unanswered goals in the second and third rounds for the RiverDogs. The Vipers sent their two leading goal-scorers, David Beauregard and Josh Tataryn out for rounds four and five, but both came up short as they couldn't beat netminder Doug Groenestege.
The Vipers drop back a point in the standings to the Danbury Trashers, who gained sole possession of second place in the UHL Eastern Division with a win over the Port Huron Flags Sunday. Roanoke's record remains above .500 and goes to 7-6-3, as they go up to 17 points with the shootout loss. The Vipers take the week off before heading to Danbury as they do battle for second place on Friday at 7:30p.m. They will then move onto Adirondack to face the first-place Frostbite on Saturday at 7:35p.m. Be sure to listen to the live action as Matt Rosen calls both games on 3WR/Fox Sports Radio, which is 910AM in Roanoke, 990AM in the New River Valley, and can be accessed via the web by clicking the "Listen Live" link at www.valleyvipershockey.com.
