
Vipers defeated by Outlaws

Leading after six innings the Calgary Vipers (38-24) gave up six runs in the next two frames to the Chico Outlaws (28-31) in a 10-6 defeat at Foothills Stadium in Calgary, Alberta. The Vipers carried three different leads in the game of 2-0, 3-2, and 5-4 but couldn't hold onto any of them in snapping their six game winning streak. In total Calgary gave up 15 hits, allowed four unearned runs, and committed three errors. Calgary's lead in the North Division temporarily drops to two and a half games pending results later this evening.
Out of the bullpen Mike Burns (1-1) took the loss after allowing two runs in the seventh inning while David Slovak (1-0) by striking out the only batter he faced with the bases loaded to end the sixth inning.
Calgary opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning when Jonny Kaplan and Jimmy Rohan doubled followed by a C.J. Ziegler singled and Lino Garcia sacrifice fly for a 2-0 advantage.
Chico quickly tied the game at 2-2 in the second as Jake Rife singled and Adam Buchini hit a home run.
The Vipers retook the lead at 3-2 in the fourth frame when Chad Ehrnsberger doubled, advanced to third base on a wild pitch, and scored on a Drew Miller sacrifice fly.
The Outlaws took the lead in the sixth inning at 4-3 as Buchini walked, Danny Gonzalez singled, Demetrius Banks reached on a fielding error after a sacrifice bunt to load the bases, Buchini scored on a passed ball, and Jay Pecci collected a sacrifice fly.
Calgary answered right back in the bottom of the sixth when Rohan singled, Ziegler walked, Ehrnsberger drove in a run with a base hit, Justin Tellam was intentionally walked to load the bases, and pinch hitting Louie Templeton walked for a run batted in and a 5-4 advantage.
Chico responded right away in the seventh frame as Chris Lubanski doubled, Al Quintana reached on a throwing error, Rife collected a RBI groundout, and Gonzalez singled in a run for a 6-5 lead.
In the eighth inning the Outlaws increased their lead to 10-5 when Jay Pecci and Kurt Steinhauer singled, Bobby Hill drove in a run with a base hit, Lubanski walked to load the bases, Steinhauer scored on a wild pitch, and both Hill and Lubanski scored on passed balls.
The Vipers got a run back in the bottom of the eighth as Ehrnsberger and Miller walked while Bryan Burke collected a RBI single for a 10-6 score.
This series against the Chico Outlaws in Calgary at Foothills Stadium concludes on Sunday July 31st at 1:35 where it will be 9-Inning Giveaway Day.
The Calgary Vipers will be hosting three Women's Pro Fastpitch games between the USSSA Florida Pride and the NPF Tennessee Diamonds August 2nd, 3rd and 4th at 6:30 at Foothills Stadium. Tickets are $16 for the Lower Bowl and $12 for the Upper Bowl. Three game packages are also available for $45 and $33. In addition there will be two skill clinics August 2nd and 4th from 10am - 12pm. Cost is $99 for a Clinic and Lunch or $120 for the Clinic, Lunch and two Lower Bowl tickets. There will also be a Lunch Banquet August 3rd including an autograph session with both teams and a lower bowl ticket to the August 3rd game for $49.95 with keynote speaker Cheri Kempf, the Commissioner of the NPF and an ESPN analyst.
