Calgary Vipers News Release
The Calgary Vipers announce today that pitcher Jay Broughton has been acquired by the Boston Red Sox organization. Last night the right hander made his fifth start with the Snakes and was great in tossing six scoreless innings while allowing three hits and striking out five. Immediately after the game the Indianapolis, Indiana native was signed by the Red Sox Assistant to General Manager Allard Baird who also heads the team's professional scouting department. Baird was also the General Manager of the Kansas City Royals back in 2003 when Vipers' Manager Morgan Burkhart played on the Major League Club. The 23-year-old will report to the Lowell Spinners of the "A" New York-Penn League who start their season tonight in Burlington, Vermont.
Broughton made five starts with the Vipers and had a 2-2 record with a 4.01 earned run average while striking out 23 batters in 24.2 innings. In his first two starts the 6'2" 195 pounder picked up the victory in both by throwing 11.1 innings and allowing only two runs on five hits.
In 2005 Jay was drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers but decided to attend Ball State University where he played for four years. Earlier this season he enrolled in the Golden Baseball League's Arizona Winter League and was drafted by the Vipers. Joining the Snakes for his first professional season the rookie will now get his first crack at affiliated baseball.
