St. George RoadRunners News Release
Four runs by Na Koa Ikaika Maui in the bottom of the first inning proved to be too much for the visiting St. George RoadRunners who fell 6-3 on Thursday for the third consecutive game.
Raymar Diaz surrendered three hits in Na Koa's initial outburst. The righty recovered to toss the first STG complete game this season, albeit in a losing effort. Diaz (1-2) threw 112 pitches in eight frames allowing six runs on 10 hits on the night. He also tallied five strikeouts.
Former RoadRunner David Seccombe earned the win at home for the second straight appearance. Over six frames, he gave up three runs on seven hits.
In the Maui first, Fehlandt Lentini reached on an error to third and Gered Mochizuki walked. Phil Avlas knocked in Lentine with a single and Mark Okano followed with another RBI hit. Chris Nash singled home the third run while Michael Higa's groundout netted the fourth score.
St. George cut the lead in half in the second after Diaz's single with one out loaded the bags. Ruddy Yan hit a grounder up the middle and when Mochizuki's throw bounced past first, Scott Clement and C.J. Lang scored.
Avlas led off the Maui third with a solo bomb off the scoreboard and added a third RBI with a groundout in the fifth.
Yosvany Almario hit the RoadRunners' first homer of the series, a lead-off liner past the left field pole in the sixth.
Na Koa relievers Gregorio Martinez, a former RoadRunner, allowed one hit in two frames and Jamie Vermilyea tossed a 1-2-3 ninth to close out his third save.
Almario and Henry Calderon each had two hits. Five different Maui players each had two safeties to tally 10 on the night.
Game four of the seven-game marathon is Friday night at 10:35pm Mountain. St. George is expected to start RHP Reed Dickert.
Listen to all of the live coverage on ESPN SportsRadio 1210 and Network1Sports.com with John Potter beginning at 10:25pm.
NOTES: Jermy Acey went 0-3 but walked in the eighth to extend his on-base streak to 22 straight... Diaz's complete game was the first in a nine-inning contest since Seccombe shutout Long Beach on July 23, 2009. Justin Abbott was the last STG pitcher to throw nine innings - he received a no-decision in an extra innings game against the Armada... Na Koa Ikaika Maui is 8-1 in their current homestand.
