Villalona Powers Giants to 8-1 Win

San Bernardino, CA- The San Jose Giants got two homers from first baseman Angel Villalona and six strong innings from rookie southpaw Andrew Suarez in an 8-1 drubbing of the Inland Empire 66ers at San Manuel Stadium on Wednesday. The loss was the Sixers third straight defeat and 13th in their last 14 games.

Villalona got the Giants (66-63, 36-23) going with a two-out, two-run liner over the left field wall against Inland Empire starter Harrison Cooney (1-13). The Giants made it 4-0 on an RBI double by Tyler Horan and RBI single by Seth Harrison in the second inning. Harrison had three hits in the game. The Giants capped their scoring with a four run fifth inning. Villalona tagged his second homer of the game, another two-run shot. It was his third of the series and 12th of the year. He now has 35 career homers with San Jose, fifth most in franchise history. Villalona added a single for a three-hit effort. Horan capped the scoring with a two run single making it 8-0. Cooney went five innings allowing eight runs on 10 hits with four Ks and two walks.

Andrew Suarez earned his first California League win for the Giants. The southpaw who was drafted this June by San Francisco out of the University of Miami tossed a career-high six innings. The lone run-scoring blemish on the night for Suarez came in the bottom of the sixth inning. Inland Empire (59-70, 24-35) catcher Wade Wass smoked an opposite field homer out to right to give the 66ers their lone run of the night. It was Wass' first California League dinger. Suarez surrendered five hits and no walks while fanning five.

Tyler Carpenter tossed three scoreless frames for the 66ers allowing just two hits and no walks with three K's. Alex Blackford added a shutout ninth for IE; the righty from Arizona State struck out the side. The bullpen for San Jose was equally stout. Lefty Luis Ysla delivered two perfect innings for the Giants with three strikeouts. Jeff Soptic allowed a base hit to 66er Bo Way in the bottom of the ninth but struck out Kody Eaves to finish off the game. Way had the lone multi-hit game for Inland Empire with two singles.
