Vieth Headed North to Alaska

Waterloo, Iowa-After Monday's high temperature in Waterloo barely broke above zero, Austin Vieth's decision to attend the University of Alaska in Fairbanks during his college career (where thermometers reached nearly 30 degrees Monday) seems like a balmy choice.

Vieth is spending his second season in the Cedar Valley. The Hawks acquired the Marinette, Wisconsin native early in 2012/13 from the Janesville Jets of the North American Hockey League. In 45 USHL regular season games last year, Vieth notched six goals and eight assists, then added two more playoff goals - including a game-winner - during a postseason series with the Fargo Force. In 20 games so far during 2013/14, Vieth has registered two goals and six assists. His marker on November 29th in Cedar Rapids was the decisive score in Waterloo's 3-0 win over the RoughRiders.

"Austin brings a blue-collar attitude to the rink. He comes to work everyday," said Black Hawks Head Coach P.K. O'Handley. "I know he will put the two-thirds of this season which still remain to good use and be ready for the NCAA next fall."

Vieth is the second member of the 2013/14 Black Hawks to make a commitment to the Nanooks program. Fellow forward Peter Krieger will also be going to Fairbanks next fall. Alaska is currently 6-8-2; the school joined the Western Collegiate Hockey Association this year.

The Hawks now have 14 players committed to an NCAA Division I institution. A total of 58 alumni who have worn a Waterloo sweater are playing in college hockey this season.
