Victoria Seals News Release

Tucson, AZ - Looking to avenge back-to-back walk-off losses at Hi Corbett Field, the Victoria Seals closed out a three-game set against the Tucson Toros on Sunday night. As Cibney Bello (4-0) took to the mound for the second time against Victoria this season, the Seals answered back with right-hander James Garcia (1-1) in the series finale.

Striking first for the third consecutive game, the Seals grabbed a 1-0 lead when Gabriel Riley launched the first pitch of the second inning over the left field fence for his first home run of the year for Victoria.

After both teams went down in order in the third frame, the Toros drew even in the bottom of the fourth when an RBI single from Jim Rushford scored Dustin Yount, who had reached on a base hit earlier in the frame. The Seals would provide an answer in the top of the fifth, however, using a lead-off hit from Terry Mermer for a 2-1 lead after a one-run single courtesy of Bret LeVier.

Still, the pesky Toros would even the game once more when an error to LeVier to start the sixth inning came in to knot the game 2-2 after Ryan Priddy ripped a single up the middle. Tucson would then grab the lead for the first time in the bottom of the seventh, using another RBI base hit from Priddy - this time with two outs in the frame - to move out front 3-2.

But Victoria refused to go away quietly in the face of six straight losses, getting a pair of singles from Josh Arhart and Brett Flowers to start off the eighth frame, followed by a three-run home run from Mermer to jump back into the driver's seat, up 5-3 into the ninth.

Turning to Dane De La Rosa once more in the bottom of the ninth, the Victoria closer finally got the better of the Toros with three straight outs to atone for a pair of walk-off hits this weekend. Wrapping up the series with a 5-3 win, the Seals avoid their first series sweep in over a month.

Reliever Eduardo Baeza gets credit for his second win of the year for the Seals, while Tucson starter Cibney Bello is on the hook for his first loss of the season in game three. Terry Mermer made up for three errors in the Seals' game two loss by posting 2 hits and 3 RBI's for 6 runs batted in over the last two games.
