Victoria Seals News Release
Victoria, BC - After dropping the first two contests against the Edmonton Capitals at Telus Field, the Victoria Seals were looking for their first win on the season on Saturday night. Victoria went with third-year pro Isaac Hess (0-0) on the mound, while the Capitals sent Chris Little (0-0) to the bump to start game.
For the third straight game it would be the Capitals who opened the score, collecting a single run in the bottom of the first inning. This time, however, Victoria would strike back with their biggest offense push of the season.
A lead-off double from Brian Rios would start the ball rolling. After a walk to Kyle Nichols, and an error from Joe Jianetti put Matt Kavanaugh on to load the bases, a single from catcher Josh Arhart would tie the game at one. Bret LeVier was hit by a pitch to give the Seals the first lead in franchise history, and Wilver Perez followed that up with an RBI single to put Victoria out front 3-1.
Centerfielder Chris Van Rossum then pounded a double to the wall in left field to score another two, and another double from Sergio Pedroza would give the visitors a 6-1 advantage over the Capitals. Before the inning was out, Rios picked up an RBI of his own in his second at-bat of the frame to put the Seals out to a 7-1 lead after two innings of play.
From there, Edmonton would slowly begin to chip away at the six run lead. One of two RBI's on the night from Chad Ernsberger would score Jianetti to bring Edmonton within five runs in the fourth inning. Then, in the sixth, Jorge Cortes cashed Darryl Brinkley who reached on a double earlier in the frame.
With Seals manager Darrell Evans sending Mike Reeves to the mound to start the eighth, Capitals second basemen Gary Harris gave the Seals' pitcher a rude introduction - taking his first offering over the fence in right-center field to make the score 7-4.
After Victoria was unable to add any insurance in the top of the ninth inning, Edmonton continued to press into the bottom of the frame. A lead-off walk to Jorge Cortes would score on a double from Chad Ernsberger. Then, with no outs in the inning, Max Poulin's single would give the Caps men at first-and-third with spring training walk-on Aaron Hornostaj stepping to the plate as a pinch hitter. The Woodstock, Ontario native would rip a triple down the first base line to tie the game, before scoring on a sacrifice fly from Darryl Brinkley to hand the Edmonton Capitals a dramatic win, 8-7 over the Seals.
Reliever Aaron Easton is credited with the Capitals third straight win to open the season, while to Mike Reeves moves to to 0-1 on the year with the loss. Aaron Hornostaj came through in the clutch for Edmonton, finishing 1-for-1 with two RBI's, while Darryl Brinkley notched the game winning RBI while finishing 1-for-4 at the plate. Victoria offense, which has now registered 30 hits and 23 runs in three games, was led by Chris Van Rossum, who went 2-for-5 with two RBI's on the night.
