Victoria Seals News Release
Victoria, BC - Starting the season with three consecutive losses to the Edmonton Capitals, the Victoria Seals were set to close out the four-game series at Telus Field on Sunday afternoon. The Caps sent Kris Honel (0-0) to the mound, while the Seals turned to Eduardo Baeza (0-0), making his first appearance of the season for the start.
For the first time in the series Victoria would open the scoring, collecting a pair of runs in the top of the first. With lead-off batter Chris Van Rossum reaching base on an error, followed by back-to-back walks to Wilver Perez and Sergio Pedroza, a bases-loaded walk to Matt Kavanaugh gave the Seals a 1-0 lead. First basemen Brett Flowers doubled the score moments later with a single up the middle to put the visitors out front 2-0.
As Eduardo Baeza cruised on the mound, retiring the first 11 Edmonton batters, the Seals would stretch their lead to 3-0 when a hard-hit ball from Brett Flowers eluded Capitals shortstop Max Poulin, allowing Jamar Hill to score from third base.
Edmonton's designated hitter Norm Hutchins pulled the Caps within two runs of the Seals in the fourth inning, scoring Darryl Brinkley with a double to right field. Three straight highlight reel plays kept Edmonton off the board in the seventh inning, though, including a diving stab and scoop out of the dirt from first basemen Brett Flowers, and a throw-out at second base from Seals` catcher Matt Kavanaugh.
With Baeza making way for the Seals bullpen to start the eighth inning, Victoria native Graham Campbell took to the mound for three straight outs. Javier Garcia would make his second appearance of the season for the save in the ninth inning, allowing just one walk to finish off the game for Victoria.
The Seals` three pitchers combined to surrender just four base-runners all afternoon, as Victoria claimed the first win in franchise history, a 3-1 final over the Capitals.
Eduardo Baeza picks up his first win of the season, and the first ever for Victoria, allowing just two hits through seven innings work. Edmonton`s Kris Honel moves to 0-1 on the year with the loss. Brett Flowers led the way at the plate, registering a pair of RBI`s while finishing 1-for-4 on the afternoon.
