Edmonton Capitals News Release
Edmonton, AB - Playing in their CAPS blues on a beauty Sunday afternoon, the Edmonton Capitals (3-1) suffered their first loss of the season to the Victoria Seals (1-3), due in large part to the pitching of Seals starter, Eduardo Baeza (1-0).The Victoria right-hander kept the Caps off balance throughout the game, pitching seven solid innings and giving up a single, unearned run on just two hits.
"It was going to come eventually," Caps leadoff batter, Marcus Nettles shared about the team's first loss, "It's never good to lose a game, but we didn't adjust to the pitching. Losing and winning is part of the game, just hopefully you do more winning."
Hundreds of kids stuck around after the game for the first ever Signature Sunday. Every Sunday home game, fans will be invited to meet the team.
Victoria began the scoring early in the first inning off Capitals starter, Kris Honel (0-1), who took the loss.Honel took extra time in the bullpen prior to opening pitch and seemed a little tight with three first inning walks, leading to two Seal runs.
"I haven't pitched in a while and I had a shoulder flare up from the cold when we first got here," explained Honel, "I finally settled in about halfway through the second. I was a little jittery in the first."
Victoria would take on another run in the third inning via the running game as Jamar Hill singled, stole second and third and scored on an error.Honel overcame his first inning and battled through four innings of work, leaving the game with four walks but six strikeouts on the afternoon.
The Capitals managed their only run of the game in the fourth inning.Darryl Brinkley reached on an error and later scored by way of another error on a Norm Hutchins double to the right field wall.Aside from that inning, the Caps managed only one other hit and really couldn't get anything started off of Victoria pitching.Javier Garcia picked up his first save of the season, tossing the ninth inning to close the game for the Seals.
"They (the Victoria pitchers) got the ball down low and changed up the speed a lot," Bowers noticed, "He (Baeza) kept getting ahead of the hitters. He did a great job, they deserved to win."
The Capitals are back in action at TELUS field on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, all against the Long Beach Armada.Long Beach was in Calgary over the weekend and went 1-3 against the Vipers.Former Major League pitcher, Jose Lima, will start for the Armada on Tuesday evening. This season is Lima's first back in North America since pitching with the New York Mets in 2006.He spent 2007 in the Mexican Baseball League and last year in Korea with Kai Tigers.
"I played with Lima in the Dominican Republic. He's a good friend of mine," said Bowers when asked about facing Jose Lima, " He's going to throw strikes, he's going to throw around the plate, but we'll be up for the challenge."
