Victoria Seals News Release
Fullerton, CA - Making their lone visit to Southern California this season, the Victoria Seals opened up a three-game series against the Orange County Flyers with a matinee affair on Monday. Giving left-hander Jino Gonzalez (4-4) the start, the Seals squared off against Kevin Altman (4-3) on the mound for the Flyers in game one.
Grabbing an early lead in the top of the first, the Seals jumped onto the scoreboard when Wilver Perez led the game off with a triple before Terrence McClain cashed him in with a base hit. Two batters later, Josh Arhart collected an RBI single of his own, putting the Seals ahead 2-0 through one inning of play.
After both starters settled in for three scoreless innings, Victoria doubled their lead in the top of the fifth inning. Newcomer Jerry Madueno led the frame off with a single and advanced to third, giving he and Perez the chance to combine for a double steal that put the Seals up by three and drew Perez within two stolen bases of a new Golden Baseball League single-season record.
Then, after a wild pitch allowed Perez to move to third base, Terrence McClain notched a sacrifice fly to give the Seals a 4-0 lead. Adding another pair of runs in the top of the sixth, a lead-off single from Josh Arhart allowed Brian Rios to give Victoria a 6-0 with a two-run home run.
With Orange County's Jimmy Rohan driving home former Seal Eric Pringle to put the Flyers on the board in the bottom of the sixth, the home side cut Victoria's lead in half on a late rally attempt. A lead-off base hit from David Harris set up a two-run blast off the bat of Julian Benavidez against Seals closer Brandon Villafuerte in the ninth inning to make it a 6-3 ball game.
Moments later, however, Steve Boggs grounded into a double play to finish off the series opener, leaving the Flyers one win short of a franchise-record tenth straight in a 6-3 Seals victory.
Jino Gonzalez earned his fifth win of the season going seven strong innings, allowing just three hits and one run, while Kevin Altman fell to 4-4 with the loss for Orange County. A 2-for-3, two runs batted in outing from Terrence McClain led the Seals to the win, while the home run from Julian Benavidez atoned for three strikeouts earlier in the game.
