Orange County Flyers News Release

FULLERTON, Calif. (August 2, 2010) - The Orange County Flyers have sent right-handed pitcher Mike Koons to the Victoria Seals to complete a pre-season trade for outfielder Sergio Pedroza. Koons, who earned an All-Star selection with Orange County this season, is 4-1 this season with a 3.50 ERA and 36 strike outs in 36 innings of work.

"We owed them a player of high quality for the caliber of player that Sergio Pedroza is," said Flyers manager Paul Abbott, who pitched 11 seasons in the Major Leagues. "They took one of my best relievers. It hurt us undoubtedly, but it had to be done. Koonsy was an anchor. A reliable set-up guy, and a positive, solid teammate. He'll be missed both on and off the field."

Koons set a new Flyers franchise record earlier this season when he pitched 16 and 2/3 consecutive scoreless innings, breaking the old mark of 16 set by Jeff Groeger in 2005. The former Houston Astros prospect also spent the 2009 season with Orange County, going 2-2 with a 3.03 ERA. He heads to a Seals team that is sixth in the league with a team 4.99 ERA.

Pedroza, who led the GBL in 2009 with 20 homeruns, currently leads the Flyers with eight homers. He has emerged as the team's cleanup batter with 41 RBI and a .318 batting average, starting as a corner outfielder since mid June. The former Cal State Fullerton Titan won a College World Series in 2004 and the GBL Championship last season with the Calgary Vipers.

The Flyers will get a chance to see Koons one last time this season as his new team, the Victoria Seals, are in town for a three-game series beginning today. The Flyers host the Seals today at 3:05pm at Fullerton College, the team's training camp site, and will play a doubleheader tomorrow against Victoria starting at 12:05pm at Fullerton College. Admission to the games is free to the public. For more information, please call (714) 526-8326 or visit www.OrangeCountyFlyers.com.
