Victoria, BC - The Victoria Seals are proud to announce that they have acquired the rights to Mike Koons (RHP) from the Orange County Flyers, completing a pre-season trade which saw Sergio Pedroza (OF) head south to Fullerton. Victoria also signed Jerry Madueno (INF) to a contract ahead of this weeks' series against the Flyers.
A former Houston Astros prospect, Mike Koons is 4-1 this season with a 3.50 ERA and 36 strike outs in 36 innings on the mound for Orange County. The Milwaukee, Wisconsin native also spent the 2009 campaign with the Flyers, going 2-2 with a 3.03 ERA. A San Diego State University graduate, Koons is now in the middle of his fourth professional season since completing his NCAA career.
"Mike is a great addition to our pitching staff," said Seals Field Manager Kip Gross. "He is an experienced and reliable arm down the stretch, and the kind of player that can really boost the rest of our bullpen."
Sergio Pedroza currently leads the Flyers with eight home runs to go with 41 RBI and a .318 batting average since returning to his former alma mater of California State University, Fullerton and Goodwin Field, where Orange County calls home.
Also joining the Seals on their California road swing is Jerry Madueno, who has already appeared as member of the Chico Outlaws and Tijuana Cimarrones this season. The Oxnard, California product has a combined .211 batting average through 19 games played in 2010.
In order to open up the necessary roster spots, the Seals released Victoria native Kyle Orr (INF) earlier in the day, and placed local product Charlie Strandlund (INF) on the temporary inactive list.
The Seals open up a three-game set against the Orange County Flyers this afternoon with a game that started at 3:05 p.m. (PT). The contest will not be covered on the Victoria Seals Broadcast Network. But fans can still catch the game by tuning into Josh Feldman at www.orangecountyflyers.com.
