Victoria Seals Slammed by the Scorpions

Victoria Seals News Release

Yuma, AZ - Squaring off against the top team in the South Division, the Victoria Seals arrived at Desert Sun Stadium for the first game of a three-game set against the Yuma Scorpions on Friday night. Turning to Walnut Creek, California native Chris Bodishbaugh (0-0) for the start, the Seals matched up against former Seattle Mariner Cha-Seung Baek (1-1) in the series opener.

Scoring in the first inning for just the third time this season, the Seals posted an early lead when a lead-off walk to Sean Smith scored on a base-hit RBI from Colin Moro. Victoria then stretched their advantage to 3-0 with the help of back-to-back singles from Terrence McClain and Chris Van Rossum and an infield error from the Scorpions.

Fighting back with offense of their own in the bottom of the first, Yuma pulled within one on the back of base hits from Tim Rodriguez and Santo De Leon, cashing a lead-off walk and a runner reached on an miscue from Bodishbaugh. The Scorpions then rallied to take a two-run lead in the bottom of the second inning, with Johny Celis collecting his first home run of the year and Javier Herrera scoring another pair on an RBI double.

After the Seals pulled within one to make the game 5-4 in the fifth, Victoria's pitching came unraveled in the bottom of the frame. With Nick Martin taking over for Anthony Pluta on the mound, a two-run double from Celis put the home side up 7-4. Then, with two outs in the inning, Lee Cruz cashed in another pair with an RBI single before De Leon and Ruben Sanchez both chimed in with two-run hits to stretch the lead to nine runs.

Before the fifth frame was complete Celis collected his second RBI hit of the inning to cap a nine-run frame for the Scorpions, giving Yuma a 14-4 lead heading into the sixth.

Answering with three runs of their own in the next half inning, Victoria capitalized on an RBI single off the bat of Sean Smith and a two-run double courtesy of Wilver Perez to post three runs and make the score 14-7. Despite adding two more runs in the top of the ninth, one bad inning cost the Seals again, as Victoria drops its fifth straight and falls to 0-4 on their Arizona road trip.

Cha-Seung Baek was awarded the win for the Scorpions, while Seals starter Chris Bodishbaugh took the loss after 1.2 inning on the mound. Victoria used a total of seven pitchers in the loss (an club record), but were still unable to contain Santo De Leon, Ruben Sanchez and Johny Celis who combined for eight hits and seven RBI's on the night.
