Chico Outlaws News Release

(Tijuana, Mexico. June 4th, 2010) In a game that ended just past midnight due to delay due to a lighting issue, the Chico Outlaws pounded out 13 hits enroute to a 15-4 victory over the Tijuana Cimarrones at Red Hills Stadium south of the border on Friday night.

Chico's Kris Honel (3-0) squared off against the Cimarrones for the third time in two weeks. With his last appearance in Tijuana resulting in a seven-inning no-hitter (and subsequent naming as the Golden Baseball League's Pitcher of the Week award for Week One), Honel again had the Cimarrones number at their home ballpark. Tossing six innings despite an hour long delay in the game that occurred when the Outlaws took the field for the bottom of the first inning and the outfield lights would not fully come on, Honel allowed four runs, three earned, on his six hits and struck out four.

And just like last time in Tijuana with Honel on the hill, the Chico "Lumber Company" did not disappoint, providing Honel with 15 runs on 10 hits, including three homeruns.

The action started in the top of the first inning when Cimarrones starter Carlos Artiles walked four of the first five Outlaws hitters, culminating in a walk to Rich Janeway that scored Blake Gailen with the game's first run. One batter later, catcher Robby Alcombrack, starting in place of the injured Mike Rose, smacked a grand slam homerun to left center field to make the score 5-0. Alex Prieto then doubled, bringing up Honel, who helped his own cause with an RBI single and pushing the score to 6-0.

As the teams traded places for the bottom of the first inning, the outfield lights malfunctioned while trying to come on, causing the hour long delay in the game, which started at 7:45 pm local time. Just after 9:00 pm, the lights were restored and the game was continued. Honel, who had warmed up in the bullpen prior to his start, came back out and started the game for the Outlaws.

In the fifth inning, Chico's Bobby Hill led off with a walk and was sent home on the front end of a JJ Sherrill two-run homerun, making the score 8-3 at that point. After a Mikael Jova double drove the Cimarrones' Yoffri Martinez out of the game, Tijuana's Reynier Gonzalez was greeted by a Janeway single and then an RBI single from Ismael Castro, bringing the score to 9-3. Two batters later, Honel delivered again, this time a triple over the head of right fielder Juan Velasquez, scoring both Janeway and Castro and the route was on at 11-3.

Tijuana got solo runs in the first, second, third and fifth innings. Juan Velasquez went 3 for 4, RBI and provided the offensive highlights of the night for Tijuana, who dropped to 2-11 on the year and remain in last place in the GBL Southern Division.

The Outlaws plated four more runs in the sixth off Gonzalez. Hill started things with a solo homer, his second of the year, for a 12-3 lead. A walk to Sherrill and a single by Jova preceded an RBI single from Janeway before Castro's RBI groundout resulted in the final Outlaws run of the night.

With the win, Chico is now 10-3 and sit in first place in the GBL's North Division.

The Outlaws will play game two of the three game series against the Cimarrones on Saturday night. Game time is set for 6:00 pm. Rightie Garret Holleran starts for Chico, while Ricardo Paulino gets the nod for Tijuana. Game three of the series will be an afternoon start on Sunday at 3:00 pm. They return to Nettleton Stadium on Tuesday June 8th at 6:35 pm against Tucson.

The game was broadcast live on Justin.TV as will the remaining two games of the series. Fans can watch the game live on www.justin.tv.com/chicooutlawsbaseball and hear the game on www.chicooutlaws.com as Dan Hawkins brings you all the action live.
