Caps Bats Come Alive on Fireworks Friday

June 5, 2010 - Golden Baseball League (GBL)
Edmonton Capitals News Release

Edmonton, AB - What a show put on by the Edmonton Capitals on and off the field. The first Safeway Fireworks was a huge hit after the game while Caps batters came up with huge hit after huge hit earlier with an 12 - 6 win over Maui Na Koa Ikaika. The Capitals recorded a season high in runs with twelve, providing some early fireworks jumping out to a big lead and then never looked back. "We had all the elements of a good baseball game out there tonight. When the pitching, hitting, and defense come together like that you know you have a good chance of winning." said Capitals Director, Baseball Operations Gord Gerlach. "We were aggressive on the base paths and made good decisions going from first to third on hits and played a real smart game."

The Capitals were led by former big leaguer Larry Bigbie who hit his first home run of the season in the first which gave the Capitals a 3-0 lead. Bigbie added an RBI single in the fifth inning as well and finished the game two for three with four RBI and three runs scored. Eric McNamee also had a big night at the plate going two for three with three runs batted in.

Clint Nageotte got his first win of the season by pitching five innings and allowing three runs on four hits. Nageotte struck out five batters in his first start of the season. Nageotte started the year pitching out of the bullpen. Canadian Scott Kelly picked up Nageotte out of the bullpen and went two scoreless innings and struck out three batters.

A couple of Capitals had some firsts in this game with Edmonton product Gary Bayrack getting the tap on the shoulder late in the game for his first professional at-bat. The local prospect tried out for the Capitals in the Open Tryout last month and received a call back earlier this week with Caps rookie Alex Chavez on the mend.

Another first year pro, A.C. Grable III also picked up his first hit as a pro coming on to pinch hit later in the game.

"It felt amazing. It was a long time coming but definitely worth the wait. I know it will be one of many more to come. I felt relaxed up there and just wanted to make good contact. I was able to square it up and it was nice to see the ball get through the infield. I'm at a loss for words. It's just a great feeling. To get that first hit here in front of our fans just made it that much more special."

The Edmonton Capitals are Edmonton's first choice for professional baseball and family entertainment. Capitals season seats start at under $9 per game and individual game tickets are available for just $10 every game. Tickets are available at all Ticketmaster locations, the TELUS Field Box Office during regular business hours, at (780) 414-GOAL (4625) or online at capsbaseball.ca.
