Victoria Seals News Release
Victoria, BC - Aiming to snap a four-game home losing skid, the Victoria Seals returned to Royal Athletic Park on Wednesday night for game two against the Edmonton Capitals. With the visitors turning to Kris Honel (4-3) for the start, the Seals countered with ace Isaac Hess (8-0), who entered in search of his first win.
Despite putting a pair of runners on base in each of the first two innings, it would take the Seals until the bottom of the third frame to open the scoring. Back-to-back walks to Sergio Pedroza and Jamar Hill, along with a base hit from Josh Arhart loaded the bases for a double from Brett Flowers and a 2-0 Victoria lead.
Then, after an error on the Seals' lineup card forced Isaac Hess to also represent Victoria in the batter's box, the pitcher picked up a pair of RBI's with a single up the middle of the infield to lift the score to 4-0. Before the frame was out, Hess came in to score from third thanks to a sacrifice fly from Bret LeVier to leave the Seals up by five runs.
Padding their lead with an RBI groundout from Terry Mermer to score Arhart in the bottom of the fifth, Victoria received another excellent outing from their starter who cruised through five shutout innings allowing just one hit until the top of the sixth frame. That's when two straight doubles from Darryl Brinkley and Joey Gomes got the Capitals on the board, before a single from Walter Young made the score 6-2.
The home side would respond in the bottom half of the inning, however, when a walk to Wilver Perez set up a two run home run from Sergio Pedroza, his fourth long ball in the last five games, to restore a six-run lead at 8-2 through six innings.
After a solo home run from Bret LeVier put Victoria up by seven, a two-run shot from Darryl Brinkley in the top half of the eighth made things interesting once again for the Capitals. But the Seals would finish off the visitors with one more run in the bottom half of the frame, and a strong performance from Ethan Katz in relief to snap the skid with a 10-4 victory.
Victoria starter Isaac Hess improves to 9-0 on the season with the win, while Edmonton pitcher Kris Honel takes his fourth loss after pitching just two innings. Sergio Pedroza, Brett Flowers, Isaac Hess and Bret LeVier all finished with two RBI's for the home side, while Darryl Brinkley had a pair of RBI's in the loss for the Capitals.
