Janeway Wins It With A Walk-Off Homer

July 30, 2009 - Golden Baseball League (GBL)
Chico Outlaws News Release

An amazing victory tonight, the Outlaws get a 2 run double from Jason Crosland, followed by Rich Janeway's walk-off bomb to rightfield that finalized the come-from-behind theatrics.

Who says you can't start a fire with some wood and cowhide? Rich Janeway (pictured) ignites the second half of the season as he hits a towering walkoff homerun in the bottom of the 9th inning to send everyone home happy tonight, as the Outlaws beat St. George 6-5.

The Outlaws came into the 9th trailing 5-2, facing 2009 GBL All-Star and former Major Leaguer Bartolome Fortunato. A leadoff single from newcomer Justin Tellam and a one-out walk from Blake Gailen brought Jason Crosland to the plate as the tying run. Crosland, who already had a walk-off home run this season, lined a double off the wall in centerfield that scored two runs, making the score 5-4. That brought Rich Janeway to the plate as the winning run, with Crosland in scoring position as the tying run. On a 1-1 pitch, Janeway hit a towering shot to rightfield that was gone off the bat, and the folks at Nettleton Stadium went delirious.

Janeway's theatrics erased the feeling of having lost a 2-0 lead in the late innings. St. George scored all 5 of their runs on the night in the 7th inning, when they sent 10 men to the plate against four different Outlaw pitchers. That half-inning turned a 2-0 Outlaws lead into a 5-2 Outlaw deficit, and things looked bleak.

However, the bullpen would hold the ledger right where it was, as Jesse Oster pitched a scoreless 8th and Ryne Tacker made his Outlaw debut with a scoreless 9th. Then, the big rally in the 9th made Tacker's effort a winning one.

The ballgame itself through the first six innings was looking like a replay of last night's pitching duel. Wayne Franklin started the ballgame was six shutout innings, scattering three hits. His counterpart, St. George's David Seccombe, sat down the first 9 Outlaws he faced before allowing single tallies in the 4th and 6th innings.

But, the late innings would prove to be where the big offensive outputs were hiding. St. George struck their 5 runs in the 7th inning, and the Outlaws 4-run 9th inning theatrics to win it.

The Outlaws victory is their 24th of the season, their 5th in the second-half, and their 3rd of the homestand. Thursday nights ballgame will now be a rubber-match between the Outlaws and St. George. First pitch flies at 7:05 p.m., and rookie sensation Mikael Ryder and his 3-0 record will toe the rubber for the Outlaws.

Come join us at Nettleton Stadium for Thursday's finale against St. George. If not Thursday, the homestand continues with an exciting weekend series against the Long Beach Armada. Friday night will be Halloween Night at the Nett, and the popular All-Star pitcher Jose Lima squares off against Outlaw hitters. Tickets are available and can be purchased at the Outlaws downtown office (308 Salem Street), by telephone (530-345-3210), or on the internet (ChicoOutlaws.com).
