Victoria Seals News Release

St. George, UT - Opening up a three-game series at Bruce Hurst Field, the Victoria Seals continued their marathon road swing against the St. George RoadRunners on Monday night. Sending Jason Kershner (5-4) to the mound for the start, the Seals squared off against Matt Rossignol (0-3), who took the start for the home side in game one.

Early offense was a theme on this night, as the Seals opened the scoring in the top of the first frame. Terrence McClain took advantage of some sloppy fielding to give Victoria 1-0 lead when his hit to right field was dropped by Yosvany Almario and then thrown past third base allowing the Victoria slugger to round the basepath.

The RoadRunners would respond in the bottom of the inning, however, when Almario atoned for his earlier blunder with a two-run home run to put St. George on top. Then, after a single from Jermy Acey and double off the bat of Henry Calderon, former Seal Brett Flowers made it a 3-1 RoadRunners lead with a sacrifice fly ball. Bouncing back with a pair of runs in the top of the second, Victoria put together singles from Matt Edgecombe, Dale Swinford and Kershner to load the bases before another error from Almario on a Wilver Perez offering evened the game 3-3.

Responding with more offense in the bottom of the second, St. George restored their three-run advantage when a single from David Ramirez, a double courtesy of Victor Butler and a walk to Lang loaded the bases before a single from Almario scored one, an RBI base on balls to Acey made it 5-3 and a sacrifice fly from Calderon wrapped up the scoring.

Coming right back to load the bases with nobody out in the top of the third, the Seals drew another error to put Tim Rodriguez on base before a walk to Brian Rios and a base hit from Josh Arhart filled the bases. Swinford then found a clutch hit for Victoria, poking a double into centrefield to cash a pair of runs and pull the Seals back within one.

Not to be outdone, the RoadRunners answered back with the help of a single from Rossignol and a two-run blast off the bat of Buttler to lift St. George to an 8-5 lead through three innings of play. But yet again the Seals would respond, using a lead-off double from Perez before a fielder's choice to Rodriguez and then a pass ball combined with a wild pitch to pull back within one run. A base hit off the bat of Brian Rios then set up a two-run bomb from Josh Arhart, giving the Seals their first lead of the contest. Two batters later, after a single from Matt Edgecombe, Colin Moro got into the act, launching his fifth home run of the season over the fence to put Victoria on top 11-8.

The Seals continued to roll into the fifth, using a lead-off walk to Perez, a single from McClain, an RBI groundout off the bat of Rodriguez and an error against Calderon on a ground ball from Arhart to stretch their advantage to 13-8 over the RoadRunners. After St. George got one back in the fifth Victoria would then tack on another set of runs in the seventh inning, when singles from McClain and Rios set up Arhart's second home run of the game, a three-run blast to make it 16-9 Seals.

Rounding out the scoring in the bottom of that seventh frame, St. George used four straight hits including a double from both Buttler and Almario to add a pair of runs to their total. But with Seals relievers Aaron Easton and P.J. Bevis stepping in to strike out four batters in the final two innings, Victoria cruised to a 16-11 win over the RoadRunners in the series opener.

Jason Kershner watched his team post six runs in the fourth to hand the Victoria starter a win, while Matt Rossignol was roughed up for 11 runs in a losing effort for St. George. Josh Arhart was brilliant in leading the Seals, posting two home runs and five RBI's, while every Victoria starter had at least one hit to overcome a strong outing from both Vince Buttler and Yosandy Almario of the RoadRunners.
