Chico Too Much To Handle In Series Opener

The Orange County Flyers couldn't keep up with the Chico Outlaws, falling 9-3 at Goodwin Field on Sunday night. Chico was led by starting pitcher Mark McLemore's 9-strikeout performance and Maikel Jova's 5-RBI night at the plate. Orange County fell to 1-1 in the second half of the GBL season.

Chico struck for three runs in the first inning, thanks to a pair of sacrifice flies by Maikel Jova and Mike Rose and an RBI-single by former Yuma Scorpion Santo DeLeon. Jova added a two-run single in the fourth inning to give the Outlaws five runs before the Flyers got on the board.

Keith Ginter drew his league-leading 39th walk of the season to lead off the bottom of the fourth, and two batter later Tyler Keeble singled up the middle to cash Ginter.

The Outlaws piled on with a four run fifth, chasing OC's starting pitcher Matt Durkin from the game on Mitch Einertson's two-run double. Jova's second two-run single of the game gave the Outlaws a 9-1 lead.

Durkin finished the night giving up eight runs (four earned) on eight hits, walking four, striking out two and hitting two batters in a losing effort. Kyle Wilson tossed 1 and 1/3 inning of relief, allowing one unearned run off one hit while walking a pair of Outlaws in his second appearance with the Flyers. Brian Harris pitched a 1-2-3 seventh for the Flyers.

Jim Goethals added a two-run single to bring the game to it's 9-3 final score. Mike Koons pitched a scoreless ninth for Orange County, striking out a pair of batters.

The Flyers and Outlaws continue their four-game series on Monday when OC's Jesse Smith takes the mound against Outlaws ace Kris Honel. First pitch is at 7:05pm, and fans are invited to go onto the field before the game up to 30 minutes before the game to take pictures with players on "Fan Photo Monday" at Goodwin Field.
