Victoria Seals Lose Tenth Straight

June 11, 2010 - Golden Baseball League (GBL)
Victoria Seals News Release

Hoping to salvage the final game of a three-game set against the Calgary Vipers, the Victoria Seals returned to Royal Athletic Park on Thursday night. Facing off against the visitors' ace Erik Dessau (2-0), the Seals countered with Los Angeles native Kyle Wilson (0-1) in the hopes of snapping a nine-game losing skid.

With both starters cruising out of the gate, Calgary blew the contest open early in the top of the third frame. A walk to Matt Edgecombe loaded the bases before Julio Ramirez drove in two with a base hit, Drew Miller scored a pair on a double to the wall and Caonabo Cosme capped off three straight hits with a two-run shot, putting the Vipers up 6-0.

Responding with offense of their own in the bottom of the frame, the Seals cut the lead in half with a lead-off solo home run from Chris Van Rossum before a single from Dale Swinford set up another home run, a two-run drive off the bat of Wilver Perez to make it a 6-3 ball game.

Victoria then completed a string of seven unanswered runs in the bottom of the sixth with the help of base hits from both Terrence McClain and Brian Rios before Josh Arhart hit a three-run rocket to right field. Then Shane Cronin was hit by a pitch, advanced to third on an error, and later put the Seals up 7-6 when he scored on a wild pitch.

Striking right back, the Vipers tied the game in the next half inning when Ramirez launched his fifth home run of the season to even the score. Swinging the momentum right back in the home side's favour, Victoria used a double courtesy of Rios ahead of another home run from Arhart with two outs in the frame to grab a 9-7 advantage.

Another big inning for Calgary in the eighth, however, put the game away as the Vipers used a pinch-hit long ball from Dillon O'Krane, the seventh combined home run of the contest, to even the score once again. Then, after a pair of wild pitches gave Calgary the lead, Miller laced a base hit up the middle of the infield to hand the Vipers a 12-9 lead.

Loading the bases with nobody out in the bottom of the ninth inning, the Seals spent their final chance to tie the game when Rios grounded into a double-play, sealing a 12-10 Calgary win. The loss is the tenth in a row for Victoria, who have now been swept in three consecutive series.

Facing just one batter to close out the seventh inning, Daniel Buller collected the win for the Vipers, while Andrew Arreola surrendered his second loss of the season after one and two-thirds innings of work. Julio Ramirez' two hits, three runs and three batted in paced the Snakes, while Josh Arhart collected a pair of home runs and five RBI's in a losing effort for Victoria.
