Edmonton Capitals News Release

It was without a doubt the most colorful and cultural game of the season at TELUS Field Thursday as the Caps entertained the Orange County Flyers on Cheemo Ukrainian Night.

There was everything from Ukrainian dancers to a stirring rendition of the Ukrainian Anthem and even a couple of perogy mascots. On the field, the Capitals did not disappoint and improved their record to 9-9 with an impressive doubleheader sweep over the Orange County Flyers . The Caps won the first game by a score of 3-1 with Chris Little picking up his first win of the season. Little pitched his best game of the season, going six innings and allowed no runs on three hits. He struck out five Flyers and walked one hitter. Chad Blackwell pitched the seventh inning for his third save of the season.

"Chris had a heck of a game." stated Capitals pitching coach Mark Randall. "He was throwing a lot of strikes and mixing it up when he had to. That's the Chris we saw last year and it was good to see him pick up that first win."

Cliff Brumbaugh broke the 0-0 tie with a two run single in the bottom of the fifth which scored Ryan Stevenson and Jorge Cortes. The Capitals added an insurance run in the sixth on an RBI single by Eric McNamee. Canadian Matt Rogelstad went two for two at the plate with a run scored and an electrifying triple off the right field wall.

"It's really starting to come together." said Capitals Field Manager Brent Bowers "As many runs that were scored tonight, it was actually the defense that really sparked our team. Third basemen Cliff Brumbaugh made a couple of terrific plays at the corner and Alex Chavez made a really athletic play to make a catch mid-air and tag his guy out at second. We also started to get good at-bats following good at-bats. It helps when you can string things together."

The Capitals continued their good pitching and timely hitting in the second game of the twin bill and won by a score of 8-4. Clint Nageotte picked up his third win of the season pitching five innings and allowing four runs over five hits. He struck out three batters and walked three.

Larry Bigbie got the offense rolling in the first inning with a moon shot solo home run which was his second of the season. The Caps added four runs in the third and three in the fourth to go ahead 8-0. Tom Collaro had the big hit in the fourth with a three run double that scored Ryan Stevenson, Larry Bigbie, and Cliff Brumbaugh.

The Capitals will continue their series against Orange County on Safeway Fireworks Friday. A spectacular fireworks display will follow the game with Evan White (0-1) taking the mound for the Caps. The Flyers will counter with former Major League All-star Byung Hyun-Kim. Kim pitched for 4 Major League teams including the Diamondbacks, Red Sox, Rockies, and Marlins. He was the closer for the 2001 Arizona Diamondbacks, who defeated the New York Yankees in the World Series.

The Edmonton Capitals are Edmonton's first choice for professional baseball and family entertainment. Capitals season seats start at under $9 per game and individual game tickets are available for just $10 every game. Tickets are available at all Ticketmaster locations, the TELUS Field Box Office during regular business hours, at (780) 414-GOAL (4625) or online at capsbaseball.ca.
