Victoria Seals News Release

The Victoria Seals opened a three game set with the Chico Outlaws in a Monday evening contest at Royal Athletic Park. Victoria sent Andrew Arreola (5-4) to the mound, while Chico countered with Garret Holleran (5-2).

Opening the scoring in the first inning, the Outlaws got on the board with three consecutive singles off the bats of J.J. Sherrill, Maikel Jova, and an RBI from Mike Rose. Chico would then jump out to a 5-0 advantage when Santo DeLeon stepped up to the plate with the bases loaded and lifted the ball over the left field fence for the grand slam.

The Outlaws started the second inning the way they finished the first with an RBI single from right fielder Jova. The Seals got on the board in the bottom of the second on a RBI double from Victoria native Charlie Strandlund that allowed Colin Moro to score from first base.

Chico added another two runs on two RBI singles from Anthony Manuel, and Holleran, off of Victoria reliever P.J. Bevis in the third frame to establish an 8-1 lead. Two more runs would score on an attempted double play that saw Strandlund record the throwing error to first base.

The Seals then added some offense of their own in the third inning, after singles from Terrence McClain, Tim Rodriguez, and a walk to Josh Arhart loaded the bases for Brian Rios. The Victoria third baseman hit an RBI fielder's choice to make the score 10-2 for the visitors.

Chico kept the hits coming in the fourth, when Pascal Del Real hit an RBI single but was thrown out at second base by Seals right fielder, Moro. Holleran matched his solid pitching display at the plate with his second RBI of the night for a 12-2 Outlaws' lead.

No mercy was shown by the opposing side on Victoria reliever Chris Bodishbaugh in the seventh, with an RBI single from Manuel. That was followed by two, two-run home runs coming off the bats of Sherrill, and Mark Samuelson for a 17-2 advantage heading into the bottom half of the seventh.

Victoria added a home run of their own in the seventh frame, off of a left field blast from Arhart. Two more runs came in to score on a throwing error from Outlaws' short stop Del Real. The home run show would continue in the eighth inning thanks to Chico's Jova hitting a two run shot over the right field fence off of the starting second baseman now relief pitcher, Strandlund.

A wild bottom of the eighth saw the Seals' bats work at full force with eight runs on seven hits. The scoring began with a single from Wilver Perez, a walk to McClain, followed by Rodriguez being hit by a pitch to load the bases for Arhart who hit a two run base hit off of reliever David Dinelli. The runs kept coming on three RBI singles by Rios, Moro, and Strandlund.

Those RBI's were followed up by an RBI double from Matt Kavanaugh, Strandlund scoring on a wild pitch from Dinelli, and McClain hitting a sacrifice fly ball to score Kavanaugh. The game headed into the ninth and final frame with Victoria trailing Chico by only six runs, a 19-13 score.

After holding off the Outlaws in the top of the ninth, the Seals made a rally attempt in the bottom half of the frame with just one out remaining. McClain hit an RBI single with the bases loaded, followed by a two-run base hit by Rodriguez to put the home side within three. With men on the corners and two away, Arhart represented the tying run at the plate and hit a Justin Segal offering to second baseman Manuel to end the comeback. Capping off a wild series opener, the Outlaws took game one by a 19-16 final score.

Garret Holleran improved to 6-2, allowing five runs on eight hits with seven strikeouts in 6.2 innings of work. Andrew Arreola recorded the loss going two innings, allowing six runs on seven hits. J.J. Sherrill contributed three hits, including a home run in four at bats for the Outlaws. Colin Moro powered the Seals' offense in a losing effort, going 4-for-4 with 1 RBI.
