Vancouver Giants News Release

The Victoria Royals beat the Vancouver Giants 5-2 Saturday night at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre in the provincial captial. With the loss the Giants fall to 1-3-0-0 this season on Vancouver Island.

It took just 88 seconds for the Royals to open up the scoring as Jordan Fransoo beat Adam Morrison on the first shot of the game to make it 1-0. Victoria would add to their lead on the power play scoring just as a 5-on-3 expired to go up 2-0. That is how things would stand through 20 minutes despite the Giants outshooting the Royals 10-6.

The Giants would get on the board just under 5 minutes into the second period as Nathan Burns scored his first goal in 13 games to cut the lead to 2-1. Later in the period, with Marek Tvrdon in the penalty box, the Royals would convert once again on the man advantage to take a 3-1 lead. Brendan Gallagher would respond for the Giants scoring his 40th goal of the season on a nice feed from Jordan Martinook to make it a 3-2 game. It is the 3rd straight season Gallagher has scored 40 goals or more. However, just 29 seconds later the Royals would regain their two goal advantage to move in front 4-2 after 40 minutes.

Royals netminder Jared Rathjen made a number of key saves in the third period including stops on Nathan Burns point blank and Marek Tvrdon on a breakaway to keep the home side in front. Victoria would add an empty netter to make it a 5-2 final. For the second straight night special teams was a major factor as the Giants went 0-for-4 on the power play, while the Royals finished 2-for-6. Adam Morrison made 22 saves in a losing cause, while Rathjen stopped 29 of 31 shots he faced. The Giants still lead the 10 game season series 5-3-0-0.

The Giants and Royals will do it all over again Sunday afternoon at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre. The puck drops at 1:05 pm. The pregame show begins at 12:35 pm on AM 650.
