Victoria Holds off Pippins Again, Wins Series
July 10, 2023 - West Coast League (WCL)
Yakima Valley Pippins News Release
A ninth-inning rally came up short for the second straight game, and the Victoria HarbourCats held on Sunday for a 6-5 win over the Yakima Valley Pippins.
The victory have Victoria the series at The Orchard with two wins after the Pippins won the Friday opener. Yakima Valley now takes a break from West Coast League play and will host three nonleague games Tuesday-Thursday before returning to league play at Ridgefield on Friday.
In the ninth, Josh Hankins reached base on a one-out single and Blake Balsz followed with a single to put the tying run in scoring position. Gabe Villaflor was hit by a pitch to load the bases, but a 4-6-3 double play ended the threat and the game.
Trailing 5-3, the Pippins tied the game in the seventh on an error and a wild pitch.
But Victoria regained the lead in the eighth after a two-base throwing error and a sacrifice bunt moved Tyler Davis to third. A sacrifice fly to left by Dallas Macias plated the eventual winning run.
Nick Dumesnil was 4-for-5 for the HarbourCats and Davis finished 2-for-4.
Jace Phelan drove in three runs with a bases-loaded double in the fifth.
