CARY, NC - The Carolina RailHawks announced on Friday that they have signed German-born English defender Simon Mensing ahead of the 2016 season. Mensing, one of the NASL's strongest defenders in 2015, will bring extensive experience and leadership to the RailHawks' back line.

"I thoroughly enjoyed my time in the NASL last season. When I played the RailHawks, I was really impressed by the fans, the atmosphere, and their facilities," said Mensing. "Signing for the RailHawks was an easy decision to make and having seen the roster so far I can honestly say that I'm really excited for a successful season."

Mensing, a 33-year-old from Wolfenbüttel, Germany, spent several years playing for Scottish Premiership League side Hamilton Academical FC. Mensing led Hamilton Academical's defense for four seasons, accumulating an impressive 20 goals and 11,877 playing minutes in over 150 appearances.

Following his notable career with Hamilton Academical FC, Mensing split the 2012 season between Scottish sides Greenock Morton and Raith Rovers. Mensing then joined Premiership League's Livingston for two years and continued to assert himself as a confident and reliable defender with an ability to score. The Livingston captain and defender netted two goals in his 33 appearances with the squad.

Mensing left Scotland for America and joined the NASL in 2015, anchoring the Atlanta Silverbacks' defensive line in his 28 appearances. Mensing's physical and assertive style of play earned him the captain's armband and the praise of Silverbacks fans and NASL supporters alike. Now, Mensing will use his veteran leadership to protect the RailHawks' goal and push toward a championship in 2016.

"Simon had a very successful season in the NASL last year and we are confident he will add positive qualities to our back line," said RailHawks Head Coach Colin Clarke. "I am sure that with him and the other additions to our roster we will be a step closer to bringing a Championship to the Triangle."
