Ottawa Fury FC News Release
OTTAWA, ON - Ottawa Fury FC midfielder Julian de Guzman has been named to the Canadian Men's National Team's roster for the upcoming camp and international friendly. Canadian Head Coach Benito Floro named his 23-man squad Friday afternoon ahead of the camp that runs January 25 through February 6 in preparations for the upcoming 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia Qualifiers. Canada will travel to the StubHub Centre in Carson, California for a friendly against the United States on February 5. The match will be broadcast live on TSN at 10:30 p.m. ET.
De Guzman, 34, re-signed with Fury FC last month keeping the Canadian Men's National Team captain in Ottawa through the 2016 NASL season. He featured in 16 matches for Fury FC last season, helping the club capture the NASL Fall Season Championship and make a run to the NASL Championship Final.
In November, de Guzman became the most capped player in Canadian Men's National Team history when he made his 85th appearance for his country in the 2018 FIFA World Cup Qualifier against Honduras.
"We need to continue to put forth our best defence, our best attack, and our best set pieces in 2016," said Floro. "Last year, we scored 18 goals and conceded only six, but we could have scored more through the chances we created. We need to improve our last pass and our shots on target."
The international test will help Canada prepare for two upcoming FIFA World Cup Qualifiers against Mexico - at home on Friday, March 25 and away on Tuesday, March 29.
In all, 11 of the 23 players ply their trade in Canada, with all five Canadian professional clubs represented.
