Vermont Wins Second Straight, 8-3 Over Sanford

Montpelier, Vt. - Starting pitcher Casey Delgado pitched seven innings of two run ball as he paced the Vermont Mountaineers to an 8-3 victory over the Sanford Mainers in New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) action on Thursday night at Montpelier Recreation Field. The win was the Mountaineers (8-8) second in a row and brought the team back to .500 on the year.

A fast paced game saw Vermont jump out in front in the bottom of the second when Logan Pierce doubled to lead off the frame and later scored on a delayed double steal in which he was able to beat a throw home. In the bottom of the fourth, Pierce (Tory, Ala./Troy) again began the inning with a single and scored when Johnny Mishu (Nashville, Tenn./Princeton) launched his first home run of the season to right field making the score 3-0 in favor of the Mountaineers.

Delgado (Miami, Fla./Austin Peay) cruised through his first five innings facing the minimum 15 batters. The only base runner he gave up during that stretch was a lead off single to Troy Black in the fourth who was later thrown out trying to steal second. Sanford (4-10) was able to break through in the sixth as with two outs, Brian Doran hit a double to deep left and scored on a throwing error from shortstop Cole Peragine allowing Black to reach base safely.

Vermont would answer back in the home half of the sixth as Rob Kelly (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif./Saint Anslem) extended his on-base streak to 12 straight games with a lead off double. After Pierce was hit by a pitch, Brian O'Grady hit a single scoring Kelly to make the score 4-1 Mountaineers. Johnny Mishu would follow with an RBI ground out before Peragine (Vernon Hills, Ill./Stony Brook) brought in another run on a single and was thrown out trying to stretch the hit into a double.

In the top of the seventh, Delgado game up a long double to Jordan Hagel but proceeded to pick him off at second prior to giving up a solo home run from Jordan Betts to cut the lead to 6-2 Vermont. He then retired the next two batters in order to complete his outing.

The Mountaineers offense continued to roll in the bottom of the seventh and eighth to make it an 8-2 advantage. Walker Stadler would relieve Delgado in the eighth and pitch a hitless inning allowing only a walk. In the top of the ninth, Stadler (Glenview, Ill./Indiana) allowed the first two batters to reach before Anthony Hajjar hit a one out RBI single to cut the lead to 8-3. John Gorman then grounded to third for a game ending double play.

Delgado (1-0) picked up his first win of the summer giving up two runs, one earned, on four hits without giving up a walk and striking out four in his seven innings. Sanford used four pitchers after starter Brandon Alphin was forced to leave the game in the second due to injury. Mike Calzetta pitched three and one-thirds giving up three runs while Stephen Rice pitch an inning and two thirds allowing three and Al Zeiher went one and one-third allowing only one run. Alphin (0-1) picked up the loss giving up a run on one hit and two walks in one and two-thirds innings.

Game Notes: The Vermont Mountaineers stole six bases in the game giving them 69 as a team...Johnny Mishu's stolen base gives him 32 for his career putting him six shy of tying Robbie Minor's (2004-2006) all-time record of 38...Brian O'Grady also stole a base giving him 30 in his two year stint with the Mountaineers.
