Vermont wins over Westerners

DANBURY, Conn. - The Vermont Mountaineers defeated the Danbury Westerners, 5-3, in New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) action at Rogers Park on Saturday night.

With the win, Vermont snaps its two-game losing streak and improves to .500 in the early going, at 3-3. Danbury falls to 0-7.

After being held scoreless by Westerners' starter Brandon Baker (Lithonia, Ga. / Missouri) for the first five innings, the Mountaineers' offense erupted for four runs in the sixth to take a 4-1 lead. Vermont sophomore third baseman Isaiah Pasteur (Westminster, Md. / Indiana) led off with an infield single. Sophomore first baseman Austin Cangelosi (Orlan Park, Ill. / Indiana) followed with a double down the left field line to set the stage at second and third with no outs. Two batters later, sophomore right fielder Austin Clemons (Louisville, Ky. / Kentucky) reached on an error by Danbury second baseman Hector Gutierrez (Detroit, Mich. / Michigan). Gutierrez's throw sailed into the Mountaineers dugout prompting a dead ball. Both Pasteur and Cangelosi scored on the play. Clemons reached second due to the errant throw and dead ball. He was credited with an RBI on the play. Two batters later and with Clemons on third, sophomore Derek Chapman (Issaquah, Wash. / Washington State) walked and moved to second on a defensive indifference. Senior second baseman Thomas Roulis (New Hyde Park, N.Y. / Dartmouth) connected on a two-RBI single to score Clemons and Chapman and provide the Mountaineers with a 4-1 edge. With the base knock, Roulis extended his hitting streak to six games.

Danbury answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning to cut the deficit to one, at 4-3. Senior first baseman Patrick Wright (Liverpool, N.Y. / Le Moyne) came up with the big hit of the frame. He smacked a two-out two-RBI single.

The Mountaineers tacked on an insurance run in the seventh to come away with the 5-3 victory. Cangelosi began the inning by reaching on a bunt single. Sophomore shortstop Garrett Copeland (Bartlett, Tenn. / Austin Peay) reached on an error by Westerners' catcher Jack Klages (St. Louis, Mo. / Missouri). Cangelosi moved from first to third on the play. Two batters later, junior designated hitter Danny Bermudez (Cummings, Ga. / Western Carolina) hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score Cangelosi and make it 5-3.

Junior starting pitcher Casey Brown (Wenonah, N.J. / Central Connecticut State) pitched very well en route to earning his second win of the season. Brown hurled five innings, surrendering one unearned run on two hits and two walks. He struck out two and moved to 2-0 on the summer.

Danbury starter Baker took the loss to fall to 0-2 on the season. Baker dealt five and two-thirds innings, allowing four runs (two earned) on eight hits and two walks. He struck out one.

For Vermont, Sam Delaplane (San Jose, Calif. / Eastern Michigan) was dominant in relief, earning a ten-out save. The save was his second of the summer. He struck out six in the outing and gave up no runs, hits or walks.
