Newport Gulls Shut out Bay Sox

June 13, 2015 - New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL)
New Bedford Bay Sox News Release

The New Bedford Bay Sox were defeated last night by the visiting Newport Gulls in a final score of 5 - 0 at Paul Walsh Field.

Bay Sox starter Michael Young (Stonehill) would make his second appearance of the season and would receive the loss in his efforts. During 5.2 innings of work, Young would strike out four Newport batters while allowing seven hits. However only one of the three runs he gave up were earned, as two defensive errors would result in two runs for the Gulls.

Newport starting pitcher Michael Mertz (Oklahoma St.) would quiet New Bedford bats in his seven complete innings on the mound. The only two hits against Mertz would come as a Tyler Orris (Millersville) single in the first inning and then a double in the sixth inning by Anthony Critelli (Holy Cross). His night would also include eight strikeouts.

The bats of Newport Gulls' Joven Afenir (Kansas) and Jon Littell (Oklahoma St.) were alive and well. The duo would record six of the Newport's twelve total hits.

It was a tough night at the plate for the entire Bay Sox lineup. New Bedford would record five total hits. Carlos Ortiz (NC Central) would pick up his first hit of the season with a single to right field in the seventh. Tyler Orris would add another single in the eighth inning.

The First Citizens' Player of the Game is awarded to Tyler Orris. Orris has been hitting the ball well as of late and it continued tonight as the senior from Millersville would finish the night by going two for four with two singles.

New Bedford will take the field again at Paul Walsh hosting the first place Mystic Schooners. This will be the first time that these two teams will square off of the 2015 NECBL season. First pitch will be at 6:30.
