Vermont Unable to Score as Danbury Blanks Mountaineers, 1-0

June 14, 2018 - New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL)
Vermont Mountaineers News Release

All it took was a single, a sac bunt, a passed ball and a sac fly to manufacture the only run Danbury would need Thursday night, as they edged past Vermont 1-0.

It was a classic pitcher's duel through the first four innings between Vermont starter Connor Lehman (Princeton, NJ/ Saint Louis) and Danbury pitcher Michael Cowell (Shelton, CT/ Fordham). Each starter traded outs, allowing only a handful of hits throughout the game.

It was the fifth where Danbury struck for the only run of the game. Nico Popa (Pittsburg, PA/ Pitt) led off the inning with a single. He advanced to second on a sac bunt from Daniel Franchi (Center Moriches, NY/ Binghamton). Following a passed ball, Popa scored on a sacrifice fly from Eddie McCabe (Norwalk, CT/ Georgetown).

The Mountaineers were able to threaten in the 9th. After Chase Achuff (St. Petersburg, FL/ Eckerd) and Samuel Duran (Melbourne, FL/ Nova Southeastern) both reached on a walk, Ronald Medina (Bronx, NY/ Keystone) attempted a sacrifice bunt. Pitcher Brian Rodriguez (Yonkers, NY/ Northeastern) made a nice play getting off the mound and throwing Achuff out at third. Brett Malm (Medford, NY/ Adelphi) drew another walk to load the bases. Those runners were erased when Jar Parker (Dallas, TX/ Arkansas Pine Bluff) grounded into a 6-4-3 double play to end the game.

The winning pitcher was Cowell, who went seven strong innings, giving up only four hits and one walk while striking out five. Rodriguez picked up the save, pitching the last two innings and striking out three. Lehman took the loss for the Mountaineers, going six innings, giving up one lone run on five hits, while striking out five.

Vermont (2-5) continues their Connecticut road trip Friday against Mystic (3-5). First pitch is at 6:05, and can be heard on CBS Sports 1240-AM WSKI or online via The NECBL Broadcast Network.
