Sixteen Gulls Selected in 2018 MLB Draft

June 14, 2018 - New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL)
Newport Gulls News Release

NEWPORT, R.I. -After all was said and done, the Newport Gulls led all New England Collegiate Baseball League teams with 16 former players drafted by twelve different clubs when the 2018 Major League Baseball Draft ended last week. The Gulls saw four players go in the first three rounds, and while 14 out of the 16 drafted played for Newport in previous summers, Kody Hoese and Reid Schaller stood out as two current Gulls selected this June.

Hoese, an infielder at Tulane University and currently Newport's starting third-baseman, was selected in the 35th round by the Kansas City Royals just minutes before Newport's 2018 home opener on June 6. Hoese's three homeruns so far this season ties him for the most long-balls in the NECBL with teammates Dalton Reed and Cole Austin. In his sophomore season for the Green Wave, Hoese held a .291 AVG with 65 hits and 13 doubles.

Joining Hoese for 2018 Gulls drafted last week is the Vanderbilt righty Reid Schaller, who was taken by the Washington Nationals in the 3rd round. Schaller just finished up his redshirt freshman season with Vanderbilt, a team that lost in the NCAA Super Regionals earlier this week. Yet to report to Newport, Schaller held a 1-1 record and a 3.77 ERA in 21 appearances for the Commodores the past spring.

With the 40th overall pick, the Kansas City Royals made the Stanford left-handed pitcher and 2016 Gull Kris Bubic the first Gull chosen in this year's draft and the highest selection of any former NECBL player in this year's draft. Bubic appeared in 11 games over the course of the 2016 season with Newport and collected 40 strikeouts with a 4.08 ERA. This past spring, Bubic started 15 games for the Cardinal, posting a 2.62 ERA while leading his team with 101 strikeouts.

Vanderbilt shortstop and 2016 Gull Connor Kaiser was the next Gull to go when he was taken in the third round by the Pittsburgh Pirates. Kaiser earned a lot of attention for his elite glove at shortstop earning NECBL Defensive Player of the Year honors in 2016. Kaiser started all 59 games for the Commodores this past season and in 222 at-bats, he hit a team fourth-best .293 with 14 doubles and six homeruns.

Taken 99th overall, Kansas RHP Jackson Goddard, who played for Newport during the 2016 season was taken by the Arizona Diamondbacks. That summer Goddard appeared in six games for the Gulls, striking out 24 batters in just 24.1 innings pitched. This past spring Goddard's 4.10 ERA was good for second-best among Jayhawks pitchers while his 60 strikeouts ranked third on his team.

Newport would have eleven more former Gulls taken in this year's 2018 MLB Draft including five from the 2016 roster, three from 2017, and two who played multiple seasons in the City-By-the-Sea. The complete 2018 draft class for Newport looks like this:
