Vermont Mountaineers News Release
KEENE, NH. - The previously undefeated Vermont Mountaineers battled against the Keene Swamp Bats at Alumni Field on Thursday night in New England Collegiate Baseball League action, and were dealt their first loss of the season. With solid at bats on both sides, Keene prevailed and came out on top 8-4.
Vermont came out of the dugout swinging in the top of the first with number two batter Kade Kretzschmar (Cal Poly San Luis Obispo / Carlsbad, Calif.) who recorded his first home run of the season and number three for the team. A base hit to the Keene shortstop put Gerry Siracusa (UMass Lowell / Kinnelon, N.J.) on the bases and he reached home on a passed ball by the catcher to make the score 2-0.
With an RBI double by Adam Retzbach (Lehigh / Greenfield Township, Pa.) in the third, Kretzschmar advanced home and scored another run before the Mountaineers went scoreless through two innings. Swamp Bat Tony Santa Maria started the home half of the third inning off with a hard hit to the shortstop to put him on base. Garrett Rice had bases loaded and was hit by a pitch to walk in Santa Maria. Paxton Tomaini drove the ball hard to right field for an RBI single that brought in two runs to tie the game.
The Mountaineers pitched six arms and hoped to get out of tight counts, but the pitching was not enough to push past Keene's swinging bats. Vermont pitcher Jake Simon (Fairleigh Dickinson / Lake Worth, Fla.) suffered the loss, going two and a third innings, giving up three runs, all earned, on three hits and a pair of walks.
Vermont returns home to take on the North Shore Navigators at 6:30 PM at Montpelier Recreation Field on Friday, June 17th. You can watch the action all season long on the NECBL Broadcast Network.
