LOWELL, MA --- The Vermont Lake Monsters jumped out quickly with four runs in the top of the first inning and added three insurance runs in the eighth for a 7-2 victory over the Lowell Spinners in New York-Penn League action Sunday afternoon at LeLecheur Park.

Three of the Lake Monsters four runs in the first were unearned due to two errors by Spinner second baseman Mookie Betts. Chris Bostick led off the game with a single and moved to third on a Betts two-base throwing error. After a walk loaded the bases, Bostick scored the first run on Betts' second error on a John Wooten grounder. Jacob Tanis followed with an RBI single to center before the Lake Monsters got a pair of sacrifice flies from Chad Lewis and Kelvin Rojas for the third and fourth runs.

The Vermont offense would go quiet after the first inning with just one base runner between the second and seventh innings, a one-out walk to Tanis in the third that was quickly erased on a caught stealing. Lowell would get its first run of the game in the bottom of the first on a wild pitch from Vermont starter Chris Lamb before leaving the bases loaded. The Spinners other run came in the fifth on back-to-back one out doubles from Aneury Tavarez and David Chester to cut the Vermont lead to 4-2.

The Spinners loaded the bases with two outs in the sixth inning on a double and two walks, but Logan Chitwood struckout Jose Iglesias (on a rehab assignment from Boston) swinging to keep the Lake Monsters lead at 4-2. Vermont's offense would finally awake with two outs in the eighth as Wooten and Jacob Tanis smashed back-to-back RBI doubles followed by a Chad Lewis RBI single to center for a 7-2 advantage.

With his RBI double in the eighth, Wooten has now hit safely in all seven games played this season. The 37th-round pick out East Carolina is hitting .357 (10-for-28) with four doubles, a homer and eight RBI in those seven games. Tanis went 2-for-3 with two RBI on Sunday and is hitting .444 (8-for-18) during his current five-game hitting streak.

Chitwood (2-0) allowed one run on four hits in three innings of relief for the win, while Tucker Healy struckout four in two perfect innings as three Vermont pitchers combined to strikeout 11 Spinners. Zach Good (0-1) gave up four runs (one earned) on just two hits over five innings to take the loss, while Chester was 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles for Lowell (4-3).

Vermont (4-3) returns home for 12 of its next 15 games at historic Centennial Field beginning with a six-game homestand Monday through Saturday. The Lake Monsters will open the homestand with a three-game series against the Connecticut Tigers starting at 7:05 pm on Monday, which is Burton's Experience Snowboarding Night with the first 500 fans receiving a free Burton hat or t-shirt.
