Vermont Lake Monsters News Release
JAMESTOWN, NY --- After struggling all season with their offense, the Lake Monsters finally had a breakout inning as Vermont scored eight runs on seven hits in the top of the fourth inning in a 10-2 victory over the Jamestown Jammers in New York-Penn League action Wednesday night at Diethrick Park.
How big was the inning? Vermont had not scored eight runs in a game over the first 28 contests of the season. The Lake Monsters had also had more than seven hits, their total in the fourth inning, in a game just eight times. It was also just the third time all season that Vermont had reached double figures in hits.
As they had on Tuesday in the series opener, the Lake Monsters took an early lead with single runs in the first and second innings for a 2-0 lead. The Jammers had a chance to tie the game in the third with the score 2-1 and had runners on second and third with one out. But Vermont starter Terrence Engles got out of the inning when Jonathan Castro, playing his first game at third base, threw out a runner at the plate on a groundball and on a flyout to end the inning.
Vermont then put the game away with the eight-run fourth inning. Francisco Guzman led off the inning with a walk and the Lake Monsters put together three straight singles, including a two-run single from Erick San Pedro. A wild pitch scored another run and Castro got his second RBI single of the game to plate San Pedro with the fourth run of the inning and a 6-1 Vermont lead.
Michael Martinez followed with the second of his three hits on the night and Michael Daniel an RBI single for another run. After a walk to Justin Maxwell and a run-scoring wild pitch, Guzman grounded a two-run single up the middle for a 10-1 lead as the Lake Monsters sent 12 batters to the plate.
Engles (1-3) allowed one run on four hits over five innings to pick up his first win of the season. Eight of the nine starters for the Lake Monsters had at least one hit, including two hits for Castro and Conway. Esequier Pie (1-2) was charged with eight runs on eight hits over 3.1 innings to take the loss for Jamestown (14-13).
The win was the second straight for Vermont (9-20), which is now 6-8 on the road this season and just 3-12 at historic Centennial Field. The Lake Monsters will look for the series sweep on Thursday at Jamestown before heading to Mahoning Valley for a three-game weekend series against the Scrappers.
