Vermont Drops Series Finale At Tri-City 5-2 On Friday

TROY, NY --- Alexander De Goti snapped a 2-2 tie with a an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning and the Tri-City ValleyCats added a pair of insurance runs in the ninth to beat Vermont 5-3 on Friday at Bruno Stadium and salvage one win in the three-game series after the Lake Monsters had taken the first two.

Vermont trailed 2-0 in the fifth inning when Miguel Guzman picked up his first hit of the season with a two-run homer to leftfield to tie the game at two. The Lake Monsters had a chance to take the lead in the fifth after the home run, but were unable to score after having runners on first and third with no outs and then the bases loaded with one out.

Randy Cesar led off the seventh for Tri-City with a double off Vermont reliever Yordy Alejo (0-1) and scored from third base two batters later on De Goti's line drive single to left. The ValleyCats then got their two eighth-inning insurance runs in the eighth off Derek Beasley, including a Carmen Benedetti RBI double and Cesar RBI single.

Lake Monsters starter Brendan Butler allowed two runs, a second-inning Benedetti RBI single and fourth-inning Tyler Jones home run, on five hits with no walks and six strikeuts over five innings in the no-decision. Luis Barrera had a pair of bunt singles to extend his current hitting streak to seven straight games, while Steven Pallares also had two hits for Vermont (3-5).

Austin Nicely (1-0) gave up one hit with two walks and three strikeouts over the final three scoreless innings to earn the victory for Tri-City (3-5), while Benedetti, Cesar, De Goti and Jones each had two hits for the ValleyCats.

Vermont, which had a three-game winning streak snapped with the loss, returns home to historic Centennial Field to begin a six-game homestand on Saturday against the Staten Island Yankees with the first 500 fans will receive a free Bucket Hat courtesy of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Vermont. The Lake Monsters will host both the Yankees and Aberdeen Ironbirds in a pair of three-game series through Thursday.
