
Perkins, Doubledays Beat IronBirds

The Auburn Doubledays, Single-A Short Season affiliate of the Washington Nationals, shut down the Aberdeen IronBirds for a 4-0 win on Thursday night from Ripken Stadium. The Doubledays pitching staff didn't allow a run while striking out 13 batters in the win. Doubledays leadoff hitter Blake Perkins picked up four hits and three RBIs in the win.
The Doubledays (5-2) scored right away with a run in the first inning off IronBirds (2-5) left-hander Travis Seabrooke. Perkins led off with a single. Seabrooke then hit Paul Panaccione with a pitch to put runners on first and second base. After a Sheldon Neuse fly out, Ryan Ripken reached first on a fielder's choice where Panaccione was tagged out, but Perkins scored to give the Doubledays a 1-0 lead.
Auburn scored another run in the second inning. With two outs, Angelo LaBruna hit a ground rule double that one-hopped over the right-field fence. Perkins followed with a single to left-center field that scored LaBruna for a 2-0 Auburn lead.
The Doubledays added two more runs in the seventh inning. Nick Banks reached first base because of an error on IronBirds shortstop Chris Clare. David Kerian also reached on another error on Clare that allowed Banks to get to third base and Kerian to reach second. Three batters later and with two outs, Perkins singled to center field. Banks and Kerian both scored as Auburn took a 4-0 advantage.
Doubledays left-hander Tyler Watson collected the win with five innings of three-hit baseball. Watson stuck out five batters while only walking two. Auburn right-handed reliever Francys Peguero struck out five batters in three innings of work, while right-hander Angher Cespedes struck out all three batters he faced.
The Doubledays and IronBirds conclude their three-game series on Friday night. Left-hander McKenzie Mills will start for the Doubledays. First pitch from Ripken Stadium is set for 7:05 p.m.
