Vermont Beats Lowell To Even Record At 21-21

BURLINGTON, VT --- Five Lake Monster batters had a multi-hit game led by Sandy Leon, who went 3-for-3 with two doubles and two RBI as Vermont beat the Lowell Spinners 8-3 in New York-Penn League action Saturday night at historic Centennial Field.

The Lake Monsters broke out on top quickly on a Justin Bloxom RBI single in the bottom of the first inning before Bloxom made it 2-0 in the third with a two-out solo home run. It was Bloxom's second home run of the season and just the third homer for Vermont at Centennial Field in 21 home games this season.

J.R. Higley led off the fourth with a triple to rightcenter and scored on a Adam Amar sacrifice fly for a three-run advantage. Leon, who had singled in his first at bat in the second, followed with a double and scored on a Sean Nicol RBI single for a 4-0 Vermont lead.

Lake Monster starter Matt Swynenberg, who had allowed six runs on seven hits and five walks in just 1 2/3 innings against Lowell in a Spinners 16-6 win on July 26th, worked the first 4 2/3 innings on Saturday and allowed six hits with five strikeouts. He left the game after giving up a two-out single in the fifth and was charged with a run when reliever Jose Pinales gave up a two-run homer to Chris McGuiness.

Vermont put the game out of reach in the seventh inning as they scored four runs on four hits off Spinner relveres Richie Lentz and Michael Bugary. J.P. Ramirez led off the inning with a triple and scored on a Destin Hood RBI single. Hood then scored on a Higley RBI single and Leon capped off the four-run inning with a two-run double for an 8-2 Lake Monsters lead.

Bloxom went 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI, while Ramirez, Higley and Francisco Soriano each had two of Vermont's 13 hits on the night. The 13 hits, which included six for extra-bases, tied a season high for the Lake Monsters and were the most in a game at Centennial for Vermont this season.

Pinales (2-1) retired the final four batters he faced after allowing the home run to earn the win, while Evan Bronson gave up one unearned run on two hits with two strikeouts over the final three innings to pick up his second save of the season. Lowell starter Jose Alvarez (4-3) allowed four runs on eight hits over five innings to take the loss.

The Lake Monsters (21-21) and Spinners (22-20) will continue the four-game series with single games at Lowell on Sunday and Monday before Vermont heads to Auburn for a three-game series. The Lake Monsters return home to Centennial Field next Friday for a three-game series against the Mahoning Valley Scrappers August 7-9.
