State College Spikes News Release
STATE COLLEGE, PA -Justin Byler gave the State College Spikes the early lead with a first-inning homer, and the Spikes would never trail as they swept a two-game series against the Auburn Doubledays with an 8-5 win at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park on Saturday.
Byler went 2-for-4 with the three-run homer, which put State College (22-21) out in front, 3-0, in the opening frame. Evan Chambers also fueled the Spikes' offense with a 2-for-5 night with a double and two runs batted in, and Aaron Baker went 2-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI. Butch Biela also contributed a multi-hit performance, going 2-for-3 and scoring twice.
The win put the Spikes back over the .500 mark after State College had slipped to 14-19 on July 22. The Spikes also took eight of ten matchups against Auburn (16-27) on the season.
Zach Foster (2-0) earned the win for State College with 2/3 scoreless innings in relief of Spikes starter Victor Black, who went 2 1/3 shutout innings and allowed one hit and three walks. Alan Knotts (2) got the save with two one-run innings to finish the game.
Scott Gracey (1-5) took the loss for Auburn after allowing five runs, four earned, on seven hits in 4 2/3 innings. Gracey also struck out three in the effort.
Sunday, the Spikes welcome the Jamestown Jammers (Florida Marlins) to Medlar Field at Lubrano Park for the first game of a two-game set at 6:05 p.m. Right-hander Ricardo Paulino (0-2) gets the start for State College against Jamestown right-hander Sandy Rosario (3-2).
Fans can enjoy a Summer Blast-Off Sunday at the park with a spectacular post-game fireworks display, plus a Pre-Game Catch on the Field and Kids Run the Bases after the game. Married couples can also tie the knot for a second time on Renew Your Vows at the Ballpark Night, and the tradition and heritage of the seat of government in Centre County will be celebrated on Bellefonte Community Night at the ballpark.
