BROOKLYN, NY --- The Vermont Lake Monsters scored two runs in each of the final three innings to rally from a four-run deficit for a 6-4 extra-inning victory over the Brooklyn Cyclones in the first game of a New York-Penn League doubleheader Wednesday night at MCU Park. The Cyclones scored three unearned runs in the nightcap for a 3-2 eight-inning victory to earn a split of the doubleheader.
Vermont trailed in the opener 4-0 when they scored two runs in the sixth inning on one hit and four walks, including bases loaded walks to David Freitas and Kevin Keyes. The Lake Monsters were then down to their final out in the seventh with no one on when Chad Mozingo and Blake Kelso both singled before a Russell Moldenhauer two-run double tied the game.
LaBrie led off the eighth with a single, moved to second on a Keyes sacrifice bunt and scored on a Jason Martinson RBI single to center for a 5-4 Vermont lead. The Lake Monsters added an insurance run one out later on a Hendry Jimenez RBI single.
Dustin Crane (2-2) allowed one hit with two walks and two strikeouts in three scoreless innings of relief for the win after Vermont starter Matt Grace had allowed four runs (two earned) on three hits over the first 4 2/3 innings. Wesley Wrenn (4-5) was charged with four runs on six hits over 2 1/3 innings to take the loss for Brooklyn. Kelso, Moldenhauer and LaBrie each had two hits for the Lake Monsters, while Mozingo and Kelso both scored twice. Cory Vaughn went 1-for-3 with three RBI for the Cyclones.
Vermont took a 2-0 lead in game two with single runs in the fifth and sixth innings, including a solo home run from Russell Moldenhauer in the sixth inning. It was the second home run in three games for Moldenhauer and his eighth of the season.
Brooklyn tied the game in the sixth with two unearned runs when Martinson booted a grounder with two outs and the bases loaded allowing Wilfredo Tovar and Joe Bonfe to score. The Cyclones then won the game in the eighth when Bonfe, who was 4-for-4 in the game, led off with a single and then scored all the way from first base when pitcher Wilson Eusebio threw a sacrifice bunt by Will Cherry down the rightfield line to end the game.
Ryan Demmin, making his first start after 13 relief appearances, gave up three hits and struckout three in five scoreless innings, while Eusebio (2-1) allowed all three unearned runs for the loss. Johan Figuereo (5-1) tossed a scoreless top of the eighth for his fifth win.
The doubleheader split leaves Vermont (34-35) 1 1/2 games behind first-place Tri-City in the Stedler Division and one game behind second-place Connecticut. The Lake Monsters and Cyclones will wrap up the four-game series on Thursday night at 7:00 pm before Vermont ends the regular-season with a four-game series at Staten Island.
