BROOKLYN, NY --- The Vermont Lake Monsters scored two runs in each of the final three innings to rally from a four-run deficit for a 6-4 extra-inning victory over the Brooklyn Cyclones in the first game of a New York-Penn League doubleheader Wednesday night at MCU Park.
Vermont trailed 4-0 when they scored two runs in the sixth inning on one hit and four walks, including bases loaded walks to David Freitas and Kevin Keyes. The Lake Monsters were then down to their final out in the seventh with no one on when Chad Mozingo and Blake Kelso both singled before a Russell Moldenhauer two-run double tied the game.
LaBrie led off the eighth with a single, moved to second on a Keyes sacrifice bunt and scored on a Jason Martinson RBI single to center for a 5-4 Vermont lead. The Lake Monsters added an insurance run one out later on a Hendry Jimenez RBI single.
Dustin Crane (2-2) allowed one hit with two walks and two strikeouts in three scoreless innings of relief for the win after Vermont starter Matt Grace had allowed four runs (two earned) on three hits over the first 4 2/3 innings. Wesley Wrenn (4-5) was charged with four runs on six hits over 2 1/3 innings to take the loss for Brooklyn.
Kelso, Moldenhauer and LaBrie each had two hits for the Lake Monsters (34-34), while Mozingo and Kelso both scored twice. Cory Vaughn went 1-for-3 with three RBI for the Cyclones (47-23).
