Fuesser Delivers Quality Outing, But Spikes Fall to Doubledays, 1-0

STATE COLLEGE, PA -- Zac Fuesser tossed six strong innings for the State College Spikes, but the Auburn Doubledays made an early run stand up to take the victory in a 1-0 pitchers' duel Wednesday night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.

Fuesser (0-4) struck out four in his longest outing of the season, but allowed the game's only run in the second inning. Steve McQuail singled to center field to lead off the frame, scoring after a sacrifice bunt by Matthew Johnson and a single to left by Yudelmis Hernandez. The Spikes (32-39) left-hander rebounded after yielding the run to retire eight in a row at one point and allow just two walks the rest of the way.

State College was held to just two hits as a team, but left a runner on third base in the eighth inning, and put together its best shot at scoring in the ninth. After Matt Skirving walked, Kevin Mort came in to pinch-run and moved up to second on Matt Curry's second walk of the game. However, Auburn (33-38) reliever Drew Permison (7) quickly picked up the last two outs of the game to preserve the win and notch the save.

Drew Maggi and Kelson Brown each provided a hit for the Spikes, with Brown reaching base a total of three times in three plate appearances.

In his tenth start of the year, Fuesser allowed a total of three hits and two walks. Mitch Fienemann came on in relief to throw two scoreless innings, allowing one hit and striking out one. Justin Ennis finished off a four-hit game for the State College pitching staff with a perfect inning of his own, striking out two.

Brandon Berl (1-1) picked up the win in relief for the Doubledays, yielding just one hit and one walk while striking out three in three innings. Permison went a single inning in the save with two walks and a strikeout.

Thursday, the Spikes and Doubledays finish their two-game set at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park with another 6:35 p.m. start. State College sends right-hander Tyler Waldron (4-6) to the mound to face Auburn left-hander Sam Strickland (3-6).

Kids eat for free at the park on Thursday thanks to Dairy Queen Grill and Chill. All kids ages 12 and under will receive a voucher good for a free hot dog, chips and sodas as they come through the gates. The first 1,000 fans of all ages will also receive a Spikes Football courtesy of Penn State Federal Credit Union, helping them to gear up for Penn State's home opener on Saturday at Beaver Stadium. The Spikes will also honor the cultures of the world on International Night at the park.

Penn State fans will get a thrill as well when former All-American wide receiver Kenny Jackson throws out the ceremonial first pitch before Thursday's game. Jackson, a key contributor to the Nittany Lions' 1982 National Championship team, is still second all-time in receiving yards with 2,006. After being selected in the first round of the 1984 NFL Draft by the Philadelphia Eagles, Jackson spent eight years in the league with the Eagle and Houston Oilers. Jackson also helped develop future NFL stars Bobby Engram, Freddie Scott and Joe Jurevicius as Penn State's wide receivers coach from 1993-2000.

College students can also take advantage of the special offers available for the final two Spikes home games.
