Las Vegas Aviators News Release
The Las Vegas 51s (58-59) pounded out 19 hits, including nine for extra bases, en route to a 16-8 win over the Iowa Cubs (58-57) Monday night at Principal Park.
The two teams combined for 31 hits and 24 runs.
Angel Sanchez had a career night to lead the 51s, finishing 3-for-5 with a grand slam, a pair of doubles, and seven RBI.
Sanchez, the ninth-place hitter in the Las Vegas lineup Monday night, deposited a 3-1 offering from Iowa reliever David Cales into the left field suites to give Las Vegas an 8-1 advantage in the fifth inning. Sanchez then helped the 51s to further open up the game with a bases- clearing three-run double in the sixth. Las Vegas led 13-2 after the sixth inning.
Trailing 13-2 in the seventh inning, the Iowa Cubs responded with a grand slam of their own. Matt Craig did his best to get the Cubs back in the game when his opposite-field blast cleared the manual scoreboard in right field and cut the 51s' lead 13-6.
The grand slam was Craig's sixth home run of the season. He added an RBI single in the ninth inning to finish 2-for-5 with five RBIs.
Travis Snider also went deep for Las Vegas. Snider's 13th home run of the season came in the fifth inning and gave the 51s a 4-1 lead at the time.
Jason Lane was 4-for-5 with two doubles, a walk, two RBI, and three runs scored for Las Vegas. Teammate Aaron Mathews finished 3-for-6 with two doubles and three RBI.
Starter David Purcey (6-5) earned the win for the 51s. He worked the first 6.2 innings and allowed six runs on nine hits. He struck out three and walked two.
Making his first triple-A start, Iowa starter Casey Lambert (1-1), allowed three runs in three innings and was tagged with the loss.
Brad Snyder's extended his hitting streak with a sixth-inning solo homer, a long blast that curled just inside the right field foul pole. The home run helped Snyder extend his current streak to 18 games, matching a career-high and setting a new team season-high.
Darwin Barney had hits in his first three at-bats for his first three- hit performance at the triple-A level.
The Cubs and 51s meet tomorrow night at Principal Park in the third game of their four-game series. Left-hander James Russell (2-1, 4.42) will start for Iowa and will oppose Las Vegas southpaw Fabio Castro (6-5, 4.15). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
