Vero Beach Devil Rays News Release
The Vero Beach Dodgers scored three runs in the 8th and put two runners on in the 9th, but couldn't catch up to the St. Lucie Mets, who handed the Dodgers a 4-3 loss at Tradition Field Thursday night. Blake DeWitt delivered his third straight multi-hit game and is batting .500 since his callup from Low Single-A Columbus. The series continues Friday night in St. Lucie at 7:00 PM.
The Mets led the entire game, taking their first lead on Blake Whealy's 2-run homer in the second inning. Whealy added an RBI double in the fourth to make it 3-0. In the seventh, Dante Brinkley singled with two outs and came home on a dropped pop fly to put the Mets ahead 4-0.
It was the next half inning when the Dodgers bats awoke. Edwin Bellorin, Travis Denker and Xavier Paul all reached on singles to load the bases with no outs. Jamie Hoffman singled in two runs and DeWitt followed with his second hit to again load the bases with no outs. However, Cole Bruce hit into the dreaded 1-2-3 double play. Still, Cory Dunlap walked to load the bases for third time in the inning and Anthony Raglani followed with a base hit to right. That scored Hoffman, but DeWitt was thrown out on a close play at home to end the inning and keep the Mets ahead.
The Dodgers threatened again in the ninth. Jimmy Rohan led off with a base hit to left and Edwin Bellorin reached on an infield single to third base. Travis Denker then popped out on a bunt attempt and Xavier Paul grounded into a double play to end the game.
The Dodgers have now lost 13 of their last 16 games. There are three games remaining in the regular season. The East Division Playoffs begin Tuesday, September 6th on the road against the 2nd Half Winner or, if the Dodgers win the 2nd Half, the team with the best remaining overall record. Entering Thursday's action, Palm Beach was in first place by 1 1/5 games over the Dodgers, while Daytona held a 1 1/2 game lead over Palm Beach for best overall record under the Dodgers.
