Vero Beach Devil Rays News Release
(Vero Beach, FL) - Eight different Dodgers scored as Vero Beach knocked out season highs of nine runs and 17 hits to down Brevard County 9-5 Wednesday night at Holman Stadium. Seven different Dodgers tallied at least two hits, and the Dodgers won their third straight - also a season high. The series continues with Thirsty Thursday at 7:00 PM.
Brevard County controlled the first half of the game, taking a 5-1 lead into the 6th. David Nicholson singled in two runs with two outs in that frame to pull Vero within two and set up the come-from-behind 7th.
Blake DeWitt led off the 7th with a single that started a string of six straight hits off reliever Luis Pena. All six Dodgers would score, but the turning point came early. With the bases loaded and no outs, Travis Denker blasted a double off the wall in left-center to clear the bases and give the Dodgers their first lead at 6-5. Cole Bruce, Jason Mooneyham and Jimmy Rohan would also drive in runs that inning.
Meanwhile, Adam Thomas (W, 1-1) and Brian Akin combined to keep Brevard County off the board the rest of the way. The only real trouble came in the 8th when two Manatees reached with two outs against Thomas. Akin came in and retired Freddy Parejo to end the threat. After a leadoff walk in the 9th, Akin struck out the final three batters to preserve the victory.
The Dodgers knocked out seven doubles, easily another season-high. Rohan finshed 3-5. Mooneyham also reached base three times and was the only Dodger to cross home plate twice.
Vero Beach, after beginning the year 1-9, has now won six of the last nine. The Dodgers have not lost a series since the Manatees swept a 3-game set in Brevard County earlier this month.
