The Erie Otters (40-26-1-1) closed out the 2010-11 OHL regular season with their eighth win in a row as Phil Varone scored with 2:19 to play in a 4-2 win for Otters against the Saginaw Spirit Friday night at The Dow Event Center.
Varone scored the first goal of the contest 35 seconds into the second period to give the Otters the lead. His tally was matched by Josh Shalla late in the second period to set up a tie game going into the third.
Vincent Trocheck scored shorthanded early in the third to give Saginaw the lead, but Greg McKegg tied the game up at 11:16 with a power play goal. Varone then scored a dramatic goal as he fired home a one-timer pass from Brett Thompson at the right circle through Tadeas Galansky. McKegg then wrapped up the game with an empty net goal to complete a terrific season with 49 goals.
The Otters outshot the Spirit, 52-40, as the goaltenders stole the show in the game. Sadikov made 38 saves for the win.
