Mississauga St. Michael's Majors News Release

Mississauga, ON - The Mississauga St. Michael's Majors hosted the Brampton Battalion this evening in this season's final installment of the battle of Peel Region. The Majors completed the sweep of their regional rivals with a 2-0 victory, making their record 8-0-0-0 for the year against Brampton.

Aside from a big hit and a couple of penalties, the first period was rather uneventful. Alex Cord took a high sticking penalty at 13:16, sending Brampton to the powerplay but the Majors penalty kill shut them down. At 19:42, Stephon Thorne took a cross checking penalty to give the Majors their first powerplay opportunity of the night. The Majors could not convert before the end of the period, meaning the double blue would start the second period on the man advantage. Shots on goal in the scoreless first period were 8-7 in favour of the Majors.

The Majors started putting some points on the board in the second period. At 3:02, Jamie Wise made a nice pass from behind the Brampton net, out in front to Corey Bureau. Bureau beat Matej Machovsky to make it 1-0 Majors. After Matt MacLeod took a cross checking penalty at 15:58, the Majors scored their second goal of the period. The goal came when Bureau got a shot on net, and Gregg Sutch was there to bang in the rebound for the goal. The goal came at 16:17, and Jamie Wise had the second assist. Shots on goal were 12-9 in the second period, as the Majors went to the dressing room with a 2-0 lead.

The third period did not change a thing. No one scored and neither team took a penalty. Although the Majors were outshot by the Battalion 9-8 in the final period, Mickael Audette stayed strong in the Mississauga net, and helped the Majors secure the victory.

Audette made 28 saves in net for the Majors, giving him his first shutout since joining Mississauga. He was awarded second star of the game for his efforts. Matej Machovsky made 23 saves on 25 shots in the loss for Brampton. He was award third star of the game while Corey Bureau was named the first star.

The Majors return home on Sunday for their final home game of the regular season when they take on the Barrie Colts at the Hershey Centre at 2:00 PM. It's Tim Hortons Fan Appreciation Day and fans will be able to get autographs from their favourite Majors following the game.
